Could You List Everything You Own Without Walking Through Your Home?
After a fire, burglary, or major storm, remembering everything you owned could be harder than you expect.
Furniture and televisions may be easy - but what about your clothes, cookware, tools, electronics, decorations, and everything stored in your closets?
A home inventory creates a record of your belongings before you need it - and you can build one using only your phone.
HERE'S HOW TO START:
1. Choose one room. Don't try to finish the entire house at once. Set a timer for 10-15 minutes and start with one manageable area.
2. Record a slow video. Film the room from several angles. Open closets, cabinets, and drawers so their contents can be seen.
3. Describe items as you record. Say the brand, approximate purchase date, and other details you remember.
4. Photograph valuable items separately. Take clear pictures of electronics, appliances, jewelry, artwork, tools, fi****ms, collectibles, and other important possessions.
5. Photograph identifying information. Capture model and serial numbers whenever they are available.
6. Save proof of purchase. Photograph receipts and save email confirmations, warranties, or online purchase records.
7. Back everything up. Store a copy somewhere you can access away from home, such as secure cloud storage, an external drive in another location, or with a trusted family member.
8. Update it regularly. Add major purchases as you make them and review the complete inventory at least once a year.
Don't have time to finish today? Start with a video of each room. A basic inventory that you improve over time is better than waiting for the perfect opportunity.
A home inventory does not determine whether an item is covered or guarantee payment after a claim, but it can help you organize and document information about your possessions.
