🌪️ Hurricane season is here 🌪️
And while we all hope for calm skies, a little preparation now can make a stressful situation much easier later. During a disaster, your priority should be getting yourself and your family to safety—not scrambling at the last minute to gather essentials like food, water, batteries, and important documents. One thing you can prepare ahead of time is your health insurance. Understanding your coverage now can save valuable time and reduce stress when it matters most, so you can focus on staying safe.
Here are a few health insurance tips to keep in mind BEFORE a storm is on the way:
1️⃣ Have more than one evacuation plan.
Choose at least two possible evacuation destinations in different directions so you have options depending on the storm’s track.
2️⃣ Check nearby medical providers ahead of time.
Look up urgent care centers, hospitals, and clinics near your evacuation locations. Knowing where to go — and what may be in-network — can save time, stress, and unexpected costs later.
3️⃣ Understand your coverage away from home.
If you evacuate to another area (like out of state), your plan may work differently there. Emergency care is generally covered at in-network rates, even out of state, but non-emergency care may not be — especially with ACA Marketplace plans. Even if your evacuation location is within your state it’s still a good idea to check the nearby providers ahead of time.
4️⃣ Keep important information easy to access.
Save digital or printed copies of your insurance ID card, your agent’s contact information, and a short list of providers near your backup destinations in case power or internet service becomes limited.
It’s better to get your questions answered now than during a disaster.
