COMING UP LATER THIS MONTH:
“Drug Take Back Day”

What should you do with unused prescription medications you no longer need? Don’t flush them, and don’t share them. Bring them to a safe disposal event instead.

Why does proper disposal matter? Studies have found pharmaceuticals in waterways, including measurable amounts of medications in many streams across the U.S. While wastewater treatment and drinking-water systems can reduce many contaminants, the best place for unused medication is still a proper collection site — not the toilet or sink.

Greer CPW and the Greer Police Department are teaming up for “Drug Take Back Day” on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. And this partnership has already made a big difference: more than 1,000 pounds of medicine have been collected and safely disposed of since the program began. That’s more than 1,000 pounds that didn’t end up being misused, left in homes, or potentially entering our waterways.

And if you’re not in the Greer, SC area be sure to look up drug take-back events that might be happening closer to you. Oct 24th is “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day,” so chances are there is an event like this one taking place in or near your town too.

Your health insurance may also already include coverage for mental health and behavioral health services, such as counseling or therapy. Take a look at your plan's benefits to see what's covered and what your costs may be. You can also talk to your insurance agent if you have any questions.

The Medicare "Annual Election Period" begins on October 15 and runs until December 7.

This is your time to review your current coverage, see what plans are offered for the coming year, and review your prescription drugs.

Also, don't forget to think about your dental and vision coverage as well. Some Medicare plans have it and some don't. Now is a good time to check and make sure.

We had a wonderful time at Kaleidoscope 2026, an immersive art experience and fundraiser presented by Premier Arts Collective and hosted by Jared Emerson.

From live art and music to an incredible collection of local artists, the evening was a beautiful reminder of the ways creativity, community, and faith can bring us one step closer to hope.

We were grateful to be there and to experience such a meaningful night in the Upstate! ✨

According to the American Cancer Society:
“About 1 in 8 women will get invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a good time to remember that knowing your risk and keeping up with recommended preventive care can make a difference.

If you have a Marketplace health plan, you may have more breast cancer prevention benefits available to you than you realize. In fact, HealthCare.gov specifically lists these three services as covered preventive care:

🎀 Understand your genetic risk
If you're at higher risk for breast cancer, BRCA genetic risk assessment and counseling is a covered preventive service under Marketplace plans. This can help you understand whether genetic testing may be appropriate and what your results could mean for your health.

🎀 Get regular mammograms
Screening mammograms are a covered preventive service for women age 40 and older, every 1–2 years. When you meet the requirements for preventive coverage and use an in-network provider, you generally won't have to pay a copay or coinsurance — even if you haven't met your deductible.

🎀 Explore prevention options
If you're at higher risk for breast cancer, counseling about medications that may help reduce your risk is also a covered preventive service. Talk with your healthcare provider to learn whether these options may be appropriate for you.

The good news? If you have a Marketplace health plan, these aren't just benefits you might have — they're among the preventive services HealthCare.gov specifically requires Marketplace plans to cover. Generally, eligible preventive services are covered at no cost when you use an in-network provider.
As always, it's a good idea to talk with your healthcare provider about what screenings and preventive care are appropriate for you.
