Here are some tips to help prevent crime during the holidays:
***At home
Secure your home: Use secondary locks on doors and windows, and install deadbolts and new window hinges.
Protect your belongings: Don't display gifts where they can be seen from outside, and use window stickers to indicate that your items are registered.
Use timers: Set timers for lights and radios to make it look like someone is home.
Ask a neighbor to help: Ask a trusted neighbor to watch your home, pick up your mail, and park in your driveway.
***When you're out
Be aware of your surroundings: Stay alert, park in well-lit areas, and lock your car doors and close your windows.
Be cautious with strangers: Be suspicious of unexpected deliveries or sales calls, and ask for identification if someone approaches your door.
***When driving
Drive defensively: Drive with heightened vigilance, and avoid shortcuts or detours.
Be prepared for inclement weather: Keep chains in your car, and make sure you have enough gas.
***When attending a party
Have a plan: Have a designated driver or use public transportation.
