Fellow Hoosiers — if your home has been impacted by the recent flooding or severe storms, here are a few important things to know.
First- Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone across Indiana dealing with flooding, damage and cleanup right now. If you or someone you know has been affected, here are a few places to start:
1: DOCUMENT YOUR DAMAGE BEFORE CLEANUP
-When it is safe to do so, take photos and videos of damage before removing or throwing away damaged items.
-Document things like:
• Water lines
• Flooring, drywall and walls
• Furniture and appliances
• Personal belongings
• Structural or exterior damage
-Keep receipts for cleanup supplies, repairs, temporary housing and other storm-related expenses.
2: REPORT YOUR DAMAGE
-Indiana uses damage reports to help determine the extent of a disaster and what recovery resources may be needed. Call Indiana 211 at 211 or 866-211-9966
-Damage reporting through 211 is available for specific activated counties and storm events. If your county isn’t currently included, contact your County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) for guidance.
-Reporting damage to 211 is not the same as filing an insurance claim or applying for financial assistance.
3: CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY OR AGENT
-Report your damage and find out what may be covered under your specific policy.
-An important reminder: damage caused by rising or surface floodwater is generally not covered by a standard homeowner’s policy and typically requires separate flood insurance.
-However, storm damage can happen in different ways, so don’t automatically assume your damage is or isn’t covered. Let your insurance company or agent review your specific situation.
4: CHECK AVAILABLE DISASTER ASSISTANCE
-Indiana has a State Disaster Relief Fund that may become available to eligible uninsured or underinsured Hoosiers following qualifying disasters.
-Availability and eligibility depend on the specific disaster and location, so assistance should not be assumed.
FEMA:Federal assistance is not automatically available to individual homeowners and renters simply because a storm or flood occurred.
Indiana currently has a federal emergency declaration related to the severe storms and flooding beginning August 11, but the types of federal assistance available can vary.
