Group life insurance through your job may be portable and/or convertible upon your separation, however there are usually drastic changes to the coverage.

Portability & Conversion – Many employer-sponsored group life insurance policies offer options for employees to either port (continue coverage as a group plan) or convert (switch to an individual policy) when leaving the job. However, not all plans offer both options, and some may not offer either.

Drastic Changes in Coverage –

Higher Costs – If you port or convert, premiums often increase significantly because you're no longer in a subsidized group plan.

Lower Coverage Limits – Portable coverage might have limits on the maximum amount you can keep.

Conversion to Whole Life – Many plans only allow conversion to a whole life policy, which is more expensive than term life.
