Inexperienced driver in the Household?
We get tons of questions on this subject so let me throw out some quick facts:
1. There is no surcharge (meaning higher rates) while your child is on there Learners Permit. By they way, give them lots of experience during this time.
2. In July of 2025 the surcharge period increase from 3 years to 8 years. It appears the surcharge amounts now are similar to what they have been for the first three years, they will continue at a smaller amount for the next 5 years now.
3. Unlike surcharges for tickets and accidents, the inexperienced surcharge does not roll of at renewal but at the anniversary of the date licensed.
4. Determining if your child is an occasional or primary operator is mandated by how many cars are on the policy. Three cars, three drivers, then your child must be a primary operator. Sorry.
5. Lastly, rates are very high for young drivers for a reason. You need to make sure you have high enough liability coverage. We suggest a minimum of $250/$500/$100 on liability and Un/Underinsured coverage.
