While the risk of nonpayment has ramped up at some leading home insurers—State Farm, Allstate, Liberty Mutual and Farmers—some others, outside the top five, such as Erie Insurance, last year paid out on relatively more claims than a decade earlier.

Home insurers pitch policies as a financial peace-of-mind safety net, but in a disaster customers can find the apparent guarantee of compensation evaporates.

Inexperienced driver in the Household?

We get tons of questions on this subject so let me throw out some quick facts:

1. There is no surcharge (meaning higher rates) while your child is on there Learners Permit. By they way, give them lots of experience during this time.

2. In July of 2025 the surcharge period increase from 3 years to 8 years. It appears the surcharge amounts now are similar to what they have been for the first three years, they will continue at a smaller amount for the next 5 years now.

3. Unlike surcharges for tickets and accidents, the inexperienced surcharge does not roll of at renewal but at the anniversary of the date licensed.

4. Determining if your child is an occasional or primary operator is mandated by how many cars are on the policy. Three cars, three drivers, then your child must be a primary operator. Sorry.

5. Lastly, rates are very high for young drivers for a reason. You need to make sure you have high enough liability coverage. We suggest a minimum of $250/$500/$100 on liability and Un/Underinsured coverage.

First, I know EVERYTHING has gone up in price, but, that is why I'm asking you to consider spending more on your auto insurance! The liability and Un/Underinsured limits we used to think were adequate are no longer. Most of our clients should have at least 250k per person and 500 k per accident. This protects you if you cause someone else injury or you, or anyone in your car is injured in an accident. Medical bills are so high now, you need this coverage!

Consider raising your deductibles to mitigate the increase in premium.

Lastly, talk to us about an umbrella policy. You should be insured to the amount you could potentially loose (your net assets). I have clients that will tell you they are worth it!

Hey Folks, be careful when getting quotes from an 800 number company. A lot of them have much higher wind and hail deductibles. I just talked to a client who was going to switch but when we discussed apples for apples we were 25% less.

This is in the Wall Street Journal today. The map represents approved homeowners insurance increases since 2020. We have had big ones in NC but other states have had it worse!
