The storm is coming …… prepare…. stay safe!!!
Prepping for a snowstorm is all about channelled nesting—making sure you have everything you need to stay warm, fed, and safe while the world outside turns into a giant marshmallow.
Since it’s January 2026 and we've seen some unpredictable winters lately, here is a streamlined checklist to help you batten down the hatches.
🥫 1. The "Power's Out" Pantry
Assume you won’t want to (or can’t) leave the house for 3 to 5 days.
* Water: At least 1 gallon per person per day.
* No-Cook Foods: Canned soups, protein bars, peanut butter, crackers, and dried fruit.
* Manual Can Opener: Don’t let a tuna can be your ultimate nemesis.
* Pet Food: Don't forget your furry roommates.
* Baby Supplies: If applicable, double up on formula and diapers.
🔋 2. Energy & Communication
* Device Charging: Top off all phones, tablets, and portable power banks now.
* Flashlights: Avoid candles if possible (fire hazard); use LED lanterns or headlamps.
* Fresh Batteries: Check the sizes for your radio and flashlights.
* Radio: A battery-powered or hand-crank weather radio is a lifesaver if the Wi-Fi cuts out.
🌡️ 3. Temperature Control
* Draft Blockers: Use rolled-up towels at the base of doors and window sills.
* Layer Up: Dig out the wool socks, thermal base layers, and beanies. Losing heat from your head is a real thing.
* Safe Heating: If using a space heater, keep it 3 feet away from anything flammable. Never use a charcoal grill or gas oven to heat your home indoors.
🛠️ 4. Outdoor & Maintenance
* Salt/Sand: Treat your walkways before the snow starts to prevent ice bonding to the pavement.
* Shovels: Ensure they are accessible (don't leave them in a shed that might get drifted shut).
* Vehicle Prep: Move cars away from trees if heavy ice is expected, pull windshield wipers up, and ensure your gas tank is at least half full.
* Pipe Protection: If it’s going to be a deep freeze, open cabinet doors under sinks and let faucets drip slightly to prevent pipes from bursting.
💊 5. The "Just In Case" Kit
* Prescriptions: Ensure you have at least a week's supply of essential meds.
* First Aid: Bandages, antiseptic, and pain relievers.
* Cash: If the power goes out locally, credit card machines at the corner store won't work.
> Pro-Tip: Fill your bathtub with water right before the storm hits. If the power goes out and you rely on a well pump, you can use that tub water to manually flush your toilets.
