Be Prepared for the Winter Storm
Before the Storm
• Protect pipes: Insulate exposed pipes, especially in crawlspaces and exterior walls. Let faucets drip during extreme cold.
• Stock essentials: Keep at least 72 hours of food, water, medications, and pet supplies.
• Check heating systems: Ensure your HVAC system heaters are functioning properly.
• Heat vacant units: If your unit is vacant, make sure the heat is on, especially in shared condominiums and townhomes. Keep heat on no lower than 55 degrees.
• Open cabinets: Open kitchen and bathroom sink cabinets to allow warmer air to circulate around plumbing
• Charge electronics: Power outages are possible—charge phones, batteries, and backup power banks.
During the Storm
• Travel: Avoid travel unless necessary. Roads may become hazardous quickly due to ice accumulation.
• Generators: Use generators safely. Only operate generators outdoors, away from windows, to avoid carbon monoxide buildup.
• Pipes: Allow faucets to drip slowly to keep unheated pipes from freezing.
After the Storm
• Please allow time for contractors to safely treat roadways, sidewalks, and communal areas. Contractors will be out as quickly as possible.
• Watch for refreezing each evening as temperatures drop into the teens or single digits.
Be Careful and Be Safe!!
