How does Vivienne live her best life?

By going to swim lessons at the YMCA, baking chocolate chip cookies with her mom, getting her hair styled, and chasing after her three older brothers at the park.

Vivienne was born with an abdominal birth defect called gastroschisis which caused her intestines to form outside of her body and disconnected. After six surgeries and a four month stay in the NICU at Children's Hospital, Vivienne is now a thriving 3-year-old.

How does Nate live his best life?

Being a loving husband, father, and two-time Olympic gold medalist

In March 2005 I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. A diagnosis that turned my world upside down I figured my best life was behind me at the young age of 16. I could not have been more wrong. Because of my phenomenal care at Children’s Wisconsin, I have been able not only to survive but thrive. I am happily married to my wife Ashley and the father to three amazing kids. In addition to my family life, I have had the privilege to represent the USA at three Paralympic games winning one bronze and two gold medals in the sport of wheelchair basketball. My appreciation for Children’s Wisconsin doesn’t stop with me. Their expertise and first-class care are significant factors into why Ashley and I and trust them with the care of our own three children. Children’s is an integral part of the Hinze family living their best life.

How do Leo's parents live their best life?

They live for TODAY!

March 30, 2019 will forever be a date that changed our life. Our story is about our son Leo who was born that day, early at 32 weeks. Leo was not expected to live beyond birth. But he gave us just enough time to fall in love with him, time to snuggle, sing to, talk to, and share him with family. 8 hours later we held him as he found his way to heaven.

Children's Wisconsin played a large part in our journey with Leo as they diagnosed and monitored the rare disease, Hydrocephalus, and ultimately provided palliative care at birth. The team of doctors and nurses from the start to the end of our time at Children’s Wisconsin, some who communicated news you don’t ever want to hear, will always have a special place in our hearts. While we expected to spend Leo’s life in and out of surgeries and appointments at Children’s to care for this rare disease, our plans quickly changed and we now move forward with a heavy heart, and a missing piece. But our lens on life has changed. We look at 8 hours very differently. We look at each moment we have as a gift. We choose to live our moments for our Leo who wasn’t given that same opportunity. We choose to “live for today.”

How is Shannon living her best life?

By going to college at UW Madison, playing with her little cousins, and riding at Bold Cycle when you don’t find her behind the front desk. She has learned a lot of love for herself and others as she embraces both the struggles and wins in her day to day life.

Shannon suffered from an Eating Disorder for 3 years as she was afraid to seek proper treatment due to the stigma surrounding mental health. Eventually her disease became life-threatening leading to her journey finding a beginning at Children’s Wisconsin. During weeks of medical stabilization and proper treatment Shannon had no choice but to be brave. She can now proudly say she is a survivor of an eating disorder and continues to live every day full of gratitude. A stigma that almost prevented Shannon from living her best life is something she now strives to defeat. Mental health is real and as humans, we can’t just get over it.

How does Truman live his best life?

“Playing with my friends.” Despite months of isolation, necessary to keep him safe, his friendships remain important and he deeply values the people in his circle.

Why we came to Children's Wisconsin?
Truman’s symptoms started as a cold and he could not kick the symptoms. After several intermittent weeks of missed school, his symptoms worsened and he became unusually tired. An appointment with his Pediatrician revealed a Strep throat infection and inflamed tonsils, but more was suspected might be going on based upon his symptoms and pallid complexion. She ordered a blood test.
Two days later we received a call from his pediatrician informing us that they found an anomaly in his blood, and we were immediately expected at the Emergency entrance of Children’s Hospital. We were admitted Friday afternoon, and by Sunday afternoon they had run all their independent tests and delivered a diagnosis of Mixed Phenotype Acute Leukemia (MPAL).
As we navigated the most devastating week of our life, our team of nurses, doctors and support staff surrounded us with compassion, and provided us with as much detailed information as we could manage. Truman’s Oncologists created a treatment plan for his cure and gave us hope for his future.

How is Gabby living her best life?

By playing with her little sister and going to school – just being a kid.

Gabby’s journey began at Children's Wisconsin because she had a large, life-threatening, tumor that could burst at any moment. The tumor needed to come out or start chemo right away. Things happened fast. The tumor was found one day and the next day she had surgery. They were unable to remove it because of its size and it being located on the main artery. A week later she started her cancer chemo treatments.

How does Oscar live his best life?

By eating whatever foods he wants, especially his favorite thing - cookies.

Oscar has a condition called EoE, in non medical terms it means that his esophagus is allergic to something. When Oscar eats whatever he’s allergic to it causes his esophagus to swell over time, making it hard for him to swallow and causing him to throw up frequently when eating.

The “Live Your Best Life” campaign is inspired by Caroline Risseeuw’s journey. Born June 10, 2020 she was diagnosed with congenital heart defects (CHD) and other pulmonary challenges. After undergoing three open-heart surgeries and intensive care for 10 months she continues to grow and catch-up on her development at home. Caroline would not be with us today if not for the caring, world-class medical teams at Children’s Wisconsin. She is able to live her best life!

While Caroline’s experience with Children’s Wisconsin is unique to her, there are many other kids in our greater community going thru their own journey. With your help we can raise critical funds to provide technology, research, resources, and the highest level of care to give other children the chance to live their best life!
