The surprisingly grim origin of the word "mortgage":
Back in medieval times, the term literally translated to "dead pledge" in Old French. It was deemed that the pledge was dead either when the debt is paid off and the lender's claim to it dies, or the borrower defaults on the payment and the owner loses the property forever. The English language adopted the term in the late 1300s and it stuck.

Hopefully you don't see homeownership as dark as the original term for a home loan would indicate!
