Beware of AI-Generated Deepfakes in Business Communications
AI technology has advanced to the point where it can create highly convincing audio and video deepfakes. These deepfakes can make you believe you are having a phone or video call with a decision-maker you know, such as a company executive. According to The Wall Street Journal, there was a case where an employee sent millions of dollars to cyber thieves, believing the company CFO had authorized the transfer during a conference call.
Here’s how AI can be used maliciously:
- Emails: AI can produce emails that might evade security software, effectively impersonate legitimate vendors, and include realistic-looking invoices.
- Malware: AI can create malware that avoids detection by security software, often attaching to emails or embedding in websites.
Tip: Take the time to review invoices, emails, and even phone and video calls requesting payment before authorizing or making payments. Be especially suspicious of communications claiming urgent payment is needed. Always use the contact information you have on file or know to be legitimate when confirming payment requests.
