Saved From Slaughterhouse

Saved From Slaughterhouse We are an organization based in Central Ohio that purchases slaughter-bound horses. Can you help / adopt or sponsor? http://savedfromslaughterhouse.com

We are based in scenic Granville, Ohio, less than two hours from the Sugarcreek Auction House, one of the largest slaughter auctions in the US. We have a modern training facility as well as access to 100 acres of pasture in the rolling hills of SE Ohio. Each of us independently wished we could help prevent the needless death of horses being sold weekly for slaughter. We have a modern training faci

lity as well as access to 100 acres of pasture seated in the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio. Such a project requires huge investments in time, money, care, and love. Hence, our team was formed. You will find that we are honest in our representation of the horses. We do not operate in competition with other rescue groups. At the auction, we bid only against the slaughter buyers, not rescue groups or private buyers, as we feel that unless a horse is being bid on by a slaughter buyer, the horse is not in a dire situation. There is no middle man, either we buy them or they receive a death sentence. We are based in scenic Granville, Ohio and are located less than two hours from the Sugar Creek Auction House, one of the largest slaughter auctions in the US.

A few people have made me aware of a segment today at 6pm on Ch 4 Columbus that supposedly is talking about horse slaughter, the place-Sugarcreek Auction, the players- slaughter buyers, Leroy and Freddie. I rarely watch tv but plan to tune in. I'm sure it will be sensationalistic but in the end the problem exists due to the actions of the horses' owners, that being not providing a lifelong home. SFSH's most recent save is a 6 yr old registered Appaloosa mare in perfect health. I bid directly against Leroy Baker. The statistics show that the majority of these slaughter bound horses are not cold or sick. More often than not they are young, so young in fact there are unweaned foals along side their dam that are separated in that auction ring. Sometimes both get on the truck to Canada.

Here are some we would like to see placed soon so that we may save more to take their place.
1. Penne- 13 yr old grulla. Came in very poor shape as you can see in previous pictures. Trained to ride but not for a beginner. $350
2.Dottie- 13h pony mare, sharp. Ok for beginners with supervision. Favorite speed is "walk". $500. See initial SFSH picture in Aug to see her progress!
3.Margie- 9 year old standardbred. Sweet as they come. Close to 16h. She does stock up if stalled for more than a day. Well broke to ride, loves attention. $350

Today was the weekly auction at Sugarcreek. It is incredibly difficult to watch 90% of the horses bought are by the 3 slaughter buyers. You know it as soon as it happens because you know the "players". Todays sale was particularly sad....a 31 year old horse went thru and was sold to slaughter. No doubt something happened in that horse's life for him to be brought to Sugarcreek. The horse was in ok shape but no one cares for a horse for 31 years and then pulls the plug and sends it to auction-I bet there it a life changing event for an older person-maybe became ill etc. I know my will specifies what happens to my animals when I become incapacitated does yours. We all like to think that our family will respect the love we have for our pets but often it's not the case. Number 2 heartbreaker was the most gorgeous Haflinger stallion I've ever seen in my life. Tail drug the ground, in excellent health and just a beautiful horse. No doubt in my mind this was a beautiful purebred undoubtedly registered and the people no longer needed him. We could find him a home if they had sent his registration certificate to auction with him. To buy him now as a stallion and possibly untrained is a difficult proposition as far as placing him. Of course there is a story for each and every horse there. We saved 3 and try to take comfort in saving that many but it's still a hard thing to do come Friday and go to the sale.

There were a lot of horses at the auction yesterday and the kill buyers were bidding and buying horses at a significantly price. Lots of drafts went through, 5 or 6 that would be good rescues. Please let us know if you want a draft. It's difficult to compete on price for the drafts since they are "meatier". Just let us know, provide a small down payment so we know you're serious. Thanks

Lucky is an older pony gelding who does not seem to have had an easy life. He was quite thin when we got him, and didn't seem to care about the other horses, he was a loner. Sometime after we got Lucky we saved Lacie. Lacie is a young beautiful mare but is almost totally blind, she can see shadows. Imagine our surprise when Lacie and Lucky became best friends! They keep separate from the other horses but are always together. As seen in the picture they stand like that to brush the flies off each other's faces. We would LOVE to find them a home together. Adoption fee is only $200 for the pair. Lucky is broke to ride, but only light riding is encouraged.

Happy 4th to all! KC is doing great, look how much weight she has gained....still looking for her forever home

Waldo update- we purchased Waldo a weanling Belgian c**t at the slaughter auction a few months ago. No horse should experience that but we have a penchant for young horses who are weaned and sent to slaughter before ever having a chance to grow up. Waldo did need to have his one leg straightened. Joan and Bill Settina were so kind to adopt him and had that procedure done Waldo looks great and will be a big boy!
