📦 Packing up a college student this week? Here’s a quick insurance detail that catches a lot of parents off guard!

If your student is living in an on-campus dorm, their belongings are usually covered under your existing homeowners or renters policy.

Off-campus housing is a totally different story. 🏠

Once they move into an off-campus apartment or rental house, your homeowners policy typically won't extend to their stuff anymore. That means their laptop, furniture, TV, and clothes aren't protected if something happens—plus, they won't have personal liability coverage if a guest gets hurt in their apartment.

If you're currently stressing about a new teen driver taking off for high school or a college student packing up the car, here’s a silver lining: we might be able to turn some of that stress into a discount!

🎓 Good Student Discount: Got a driver holding down a B average or better? Make sure you’re getting the insurance discount for it!
🏫 College students without a car: If your college kid is living on campus (usually 100+ miles away) and leaving their car at home, you might qualify for a "resident student" discount.

🍔 Nothing says summer in Michigan quite like firing up the grill!

Whether you're cooking up burgers for a weekend cookout or just making a quick dinner on the deck, grilling is a huge part of warm weather routines. But since we're right in the peak of barbecue season, a quick safety refresher never hurts!

A few quick habits to keep your backyard cookouts safe & stress-free:
📐 Give it space: Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from house siding, deck railings, and overhanging tree branches.
🧼 Keep it clean: Scraping grease buildup off the grates and tray is the easiest way to prevent sudden flare-ups.
🔥 Never leave it unattended: A hot grill pulls kids and pets in fast—keeping a 3-foot "safety zone" around the grill helps keep little ones safe!
🍔 Propane check: Always open the lid before lighting a gas grill to avoid gas buildup under the hood.

⛈️ With all the crazy rain we got in the past 24 hours—and more on the radar—it’s a good time to talk about water and your home.

When heavy storms roll through, water has a sneaky way of finding its way inside, whether it's backing up through basement drains, coming up through the floor, or washing in from outside.

One of the biggest surprises for homeowners after a major storm is learning what standard home insurance actually covers. Standard policies usually don't cover water damage from backups or surface flooding unless you have specific protection added on:

🌧️ Water Backup Coverage: This is an add-on that protects you if water or sewage backs up into your home through drains, toilets, or sump pits.
🌊 Flood Insurance: This is a separate policy altogether that covers rising surface water coming from outdoors (like heavy overland rain, overflowing creeks, or pooling yard water).
