"What's the Best Health Insurance Plan?"

Honestly? There isn't one.

After years of helping retirees and self-employed individuals find coverage, the biggest thing I've learned is that the "best" plan is different for everyone. It depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, your health history, and how often you actually use your insurance.

So before I ever recommend anything, I ask three things.
1. What doctors and hospitals do you prefer? We make sure they're in-network.
2. What prescriptions do you take? Drug formularies vary widely between plans.
3. What pre-existing conditions do you have?

One thing that surprises a lot of people — working with an agent doesn't cost you anything. No fees, no markups. A good agent isn't trying to sell you a plan. They're trying to find the one that actually makes sense for your life.

Bill had $1 million saved up for retirement, and solid health insurance. He thought he was set.

I recently came across a story about a man in this position. He was living a comfortable, middle class life. Then, unexpectedly, he had a stroke. He was forced to move into a nursing home, which cost $125K per year. After 8 years in the nursing home, his $1 million was depleted and he now relies on Medicaid.

Many people mistakenly believe that Medicare covers long-term care. Unfortunately for Bill, it does not.

This post isn’t about pushing anyone into buying long-term care insurance. In many cases, it may not make sense. But it is about making an informed decision, while you still can.

If you look into it and decide it's not for you, that’s fine. At least you made the decision while it was still your decision to make.

If you don’t, the next time you think about it could be too late. You may no longer qualify due to health, or the cost may be significantly higher with age.
