Old man winter has arrived here in Michigan. We're expecting a potent winter storm today into tomorrow. This storm will bring much of the state heavy snow and strong gusty winds! This can of course bring power outages as well as very difficult travel. If you can avoid travel during times of heavy snow and winds, that would be advisable!
If you have an extended outage:
- Dress warmly: Layer up with clothes, socks, and hats to stay warm. Cozy blankets are your new best friends, winter jackets as well!
- Close curtains and blinds: This helps trap heat in your home.
- Unplug appliances: This prevents damage from power surges when the electricity returns. But don't forget to plug them back in!
- Use flashlights instead of candles: Candles can be fire hazards, especially with curious pets or children around.
- Minimize fridge and freezer access: Opening them allows the cold air to escape, spoiling food faster. In a pinch, refrigerated items can go outside in the snow if you live in a location it's safe to do so!
- Check on vulnerable neighbors: Especially the elderly or those with young children, who may need assistance staying warm.
- Have portable phone chargers: Emergency battery packs for your phone can help extend your battery life the extra day you may need during a long outage.
- Check your sump pump and keep an eye out for water back-ups. If you can move items off of the floor ahead of time, you may save yourself from some of the troubles later.
