If a tree falls on your house during a storm, acting in the right order can help keep everyone safe and make the insurance process smoother.

-Make sure everyone is safe. If the tree damaged electrical wiring, you smell gas, or the house looks unstable, leave immediately and call 911 or your utility company if needed

-Prevent further damage if it's safe to do so. For example, place a tarp over a damaged roof if you can do so safely, or hire an emergency mitigation company. Most homeowners insurance policies expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage.

-Document everything. Take photos and videos of:
The tree on the house.
Damage to the roof, siding, windows, and interior.
Any damaged belongings.

-Contact your homeowners insurance company as soon as possible.
Report the claim and ask:
Whether emergency tree removal is covered.
If they have preferred contractors.
Whether you should get estimates before repairs.

-Keep receipts.
Save receipts for emergency repairs, hotel stays (if your home is uninhabitable), and other related expenses. Some policies may cover these costs if they are necessary.

Don't start major repairs until the adjuster has documented the damage, unless waiting would cause more damage. Emergency stabilization is usually fine.
