Willie Nelson is a country music legend, but in 1990, he made headlines for something other than his music.

💰 The IRS claimed he owed $16.7 MILLION in back taxes, interest, and penalties!

The problem? Nelson had invested in tax shelters designed to reduce his taxes, but the IRS disallowed the tax benefits.

💡 MONDAY TAX & PLANNING THOUGHT

James Gandolfini spent years playing Tony Soprano, a man obsessed with taking care of his family.

But when Gandolfini died unexpectedly in 2013, his own estate became a widely discussed example of why tax planning matters.
Gandolfini reportedly left an estate worth roughly $70 million.
His will left significant assets directly to family members, including his sisters and daughter. Because those assets did not qualify for the unlimited marital deduction available for assets left to a surviving spouse, a substantial portion of his estate was potentially exposed to federal and state estate taxes.

The interesting part?

He had a will. He had an estate plan.

But having a plan and having a tax efficient plan aren't necessarily the same thing.
For most families, we're not talking about a $70 million estate.
But the lesson still applies.

💸 “JUST WRITE IT OFF!”

We’ve all heard it. But a write-off doesn’t mean you get that money back.

Here’s an easy example:

$100,000 Business Income
− $1,000 Deductible Expense
= $99,000 Income Subject to Tax

The $1,000 deduction reduces the income that may be taxed. It doesn’t put $1,000 back in your pocket.

And remember, buying something for your business doesn’t automatically make it deductible. It still has to qualify as a business expense.

🏈🍂 Monday Tax Trivia: Wisconsin Edition

Which came first: federal income tax or the Green Bay Packers?

The modern federal income tax came first.

The 16th Amendment was ratified in 1913, paving the way for the federal income tax system. The Green Bay Packers were founded six years later in 1919.

So Wisconsin has been dealing with federal income taxes longer than we’ve been cheering on the Packers. 🏈

And since it’s football season, here’s another tax fact:

🏟️ Packers tickets, tailgating, and other entertainment expenses generally aren’t deductible just because you’re entertaining a client or talking business.

Business meals can be different and may qualify for a deduction when IRS requirements are met.

When visiting Lambeau, Enjoy the game. Keep the receipts. And know the difference. 🍂🏈

For calendar year businesses, this deadline generally applies to:

🏢 S Corporations filing Form 1120S

🤝 Partnerships filing Form 1065
