Choosing an IRS tax professional based on location is like choosing a doctor based on parking.

When it comes to IRS representation, what separates a good outcome from a bad one is experience. Experience with your type of case. Experience talking to the IRS. Experience knowing which options exist and which ones fit your situation.

That kind of expertise isn't geographically dependent. And with how most IRS matters are handled today, proximity stopped mattering a long time ago.

The questions worth asking:
1. Do they handle this kind of case regularly?
2. Can they explain my options without making my head spin?
3. Will they respond when I have questions?
4. Do I trust them?

A clear yes to all four is worth more than a close office.

Labor Day isn't only about celebrating employees. It's also a reminder of the responsibility leaders have to build workplaces where people can do their best work.

The best companies don't happen by accident.

They're built one person at a time.

Did you know?
Under IRS rules, you can deduct up to $5,000 in business startup costs and $5,000 in organizational costs in your first active year, with remaining amounts amortized over 15 years.

The rules have changed in recent years, so it's important to work with a tax advisor to maximize available deductions. https://mercury.com/blog/startup-deductions-2026

Ask five people on your team this question: "What are our company's top three priorities this year?"

Would everyone give the same answer? Or, would you get five different responses?

When everyone knows the destination, it's much easier to make good decisions without waiting for direction.

Clear communication isn't just about holding meetings. It's about making sure everyone is pulling in the same direction.

Do you think your team could answer that question today?

Myth or Truth: "Catch-up bookkeeping is cheaper because I skipped all those monthly bills."

We hear this a lot. It's not true, and here's why.

When your books fall behind, someone must play detective. They dig through old bank statements. They chase down missing receipts. They rebuild months (sometimes years) of records from scratch.

That kind of work costs more per month than staying current.

The sticker price is only half the story, though. Behind-the-scenes damage like missed deductions, IRS penalties, and messy tax returns often costs more than the bookkeeping bill itself. https://www.steelledgeradvisors.com/monthly-bookkeeping-vs-catch-up-bookkeeping/

What's the biggest surprise you've had when catching up your books?
Drop it in the comments, good or bad. We read every one.

September's favorite hobby? Sneaking up on people.

One minute it's Labor Day weekend. The next minute you're asking, "Wait... taxes are due when?"

If you have an upcoming estimated tax payment or filing deadline, now's a great time to get ahead of it instead of racing the calendar. https://www.kiplinger.com/taxes/when-are-taxes-due -septembe

Have you ever ended the day completely exhausted?

Being busy feels productive. But, putting out fires doesn't.

Growth usually happens during the quieter moments when you're planning, improving systems, and making long-term decisions.

What's one thing you do every week that helps you work on the business instead of just in it?

Success has a funny way of creating new decisions.

At first, you're focused on earning more.

Then you're deciding whether to buy another property, help adult children financially, start a family foundation, sell a business, or rethink your estate plan.

None of these are bad problems to have, but they are decisions that deserve careful thought.

What's one financial decision you've found is much more complicated than you expected?

If you were launching your construction company today...

Knowing everything you know now, what's the first thing you'd do differently?
√ Hire sooner?
√ Charge more?
√ Invest in better software?
√ Say no to certain jobs?

Every successful owner has at least one lesson they wish they'd learned earlier.
