A few last-minute items before heading off to college…

Contact your insurance agent to let them know your student is heading off to college and will no longer be a regular driver of the family car. We saved $570 by moving out student to “Student Away” status.

If you have not already done so, have your student complete Power of Attorney forms. Bad things sometimes happen. I had a client whose daughter was bitten by a spider her first night on campus and lapsed into a coma. Neither Campus Security nor the hospital would provide them any information on their 18-year-old without a POA.

As I predicted in this Forbes article, the student loan repayment pause has been extended:

“There is no way the Democrats and the Biden Administration want to turn loan payments back on six months before the midterm elections,” Orsolini says. “All that would do is remind the millennials that they did not make good on their promise of student debt relief.”

President Biden initially gave borrowers hope for student loan forgiveness, but many experts say don't expect it anytime soon.

This action by the state of Illinois only harms its own residents by eliminating MORE AFFORDABLE out-of-state options for college.

Illinois students who attend out-of-state institutions will no longer be eligible for the MSEP tuition reciprocity program, which saved Illinois students $44 million in 2019-2020.

Barring new legislation, student loan payments will pick up again in the new year. Get in touch with your provider and consider deferment if you need to.

IMPORTANT last minute advice for college parents:

First, have your student complete a Medical Power of Attorney form. Now that they are 18, you can no longer act on their behalf with out one.

Secondly, check with your medical insurance to see if they are covered for Covid-19 if out of network (or state). Most policies will cover emergency services, but you should verify how they consider Covid-19.

Finally, on a less scary to think about note, call your auto insurance and let them know you student is away at school. It should knock down your premium.
