The AI boom is no longer confined to U.S. mega-cap earnings. It is becoming a global industrial and trade cycle involving foundries, advanced packaging, memory, networking, servers, power equipment and Asian exporters. That broadens the potential opportunity set—but it also introduces semiconductor-cycle risk. For portfolio analysis, I would distinguish companies benefiting from genuine shipment growth and pricing power from stocks that merely carry an “AI” label.

U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh on Monday told G20 finance leaders that the world is seeing a global investment surge that is helping to power growth, reversing past savings gluts that kept capital in low-yielding instruments amid a shortage of investment opportunities.
Warsh, attending his first international economic policy meeting since taking the reins of the U.S. central bank in May, told the G20 opening plenary session that he was looking forward to learning more about growth prospects among member economies.

Dow ends lower but still logs fifth month of gains; Nasdaq and S&P 500 gain in August despite Brent oil above $90 and 30-year yields at 5.25%
Stocks were downbeat to close out a winning month as Iran hostilities flare up and the 10-year Treasury yield reaches 4.75%.

Those of you with me for some time remember that August is usually the second-weakest month behind September, and here we are heading into September. Stay tuned!

The U.S.' six-month war with Iran is showing signs of escalation again. The two countries traded fire for the first time in more than a month, with the U.S. military striking Iranian rocket launchers and Iran aiming missiles at U.S. bases in Jordan. The economic war continues as well: U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Reuters on Sunday that Washington is likely to unveil new secondary sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran. With U.S. midterm elections looming in November, the key question is whether, when and how President Donald Trump can extricate the United States from a conflict he has repeatedly signalled he wants to end.

Morning setup: Risk assets begin the week under pressure after renewed U.S.–Iran fighting around the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil sharply higher. S&P 500 and Dow futures were down about 0.2%, Nasdaq-100 futures about 0.1%, while Brent crude jumped roughly 3.4% to $91.10 and WTI about 3.6% to $86.40. At the same time, markets are pricing roughly a 60% probability of a September Fed hike following Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech.

Brent crude futures fell for a third straight day on Wednesday, sliding more than 2% to roughly $86 per barrel on the prospect of more supply coming through the Strait of Hormuz. If this move is sustained, it would amount to the biggest weekly drop in oil prices since June.

The optimism appears to be rooted in the belief that the kinetic war may be on hold now that Washington has shifted its focus to economic sanctions. Markets were cheered by news that talks have resumed between Oman and Iran about how to make the Gulf navigable again - at least temporarily.

Whatever doubts people may have about AI demand, Nvidia's results certainly don't show it. The $5 trillion chip juggernaut comfortably ticked all the boxes yet again with its quarterly update yesterday. Meanwhile, U.S. PCE inflation came in slightly hotter than anticipated ahead of the start of the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole Symposium.

In the battle for global technological mastery being fought in the labs of AI companies, China is rapidly closing the gap with the US, and by several key metrics it’s even taken the lead. Despite efforts by Washington to restrain the speed of Chinese development through curbs on the sale of US chips needed to power such complex processing, a succession of new — and more affordable — models have shown marked improvements in coding and reasoning.
