Military Appreciation Month is a time to recognize the commitment and experiences our colleagues bring to Markel. 🎖️

Jackson Lazovik, Claims Examiner in Milwaukee, serves in the Army National Guard, where he spent six years as an infantryman supporting state and federal activations.

“Balancing service and a full-time role can be challenging, but the right support makes all the difference.”

With support from his team, Jackson is able to step away for military obligations knowing his work is covered and return without disruption. That consistency allows him to stay focused on both his service and his role at Markel.

This Military Appreciation Month, we’re proud to highlight colleagues who have served.

Joshua Thomas, Project Portfolio Lead at Markel Canada, served with the British Army’s Royal Engineers, where he received the Queen’s Commission and deployed globally during his career as a Combat Engineer, Troop Commander and Intelligence Officer.

“Markel made a new environment feel collaborative and like being part of a team again.”

After retiring from service, Joshua found that same sense of teamwork and support as he transitioned into his role at Markel. With the help of strong leadership and a collaborative environment, what could have been a challenging transition became an opportunity to grow and reconnect with a team.

We pressed “PAWS” on the workday, and it was exactly what we needed. 🐾

Recently, Black Engagement at Markel (BEAM) and the Wellbeing Network brought puppy therapy to our headquarters in Richmond, VA. It was an afternoon full of tail wags, cuddles, and plenty of smiles!

The event offered a fun, refreshing way to relieve stress, connect with colleagues, and leave feeling a little more “paws-itive.”

We’re closing our Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month spotlights by sharing voices from the Markel Asian Professionals (MAP) Network and the values that shape how they show up every day.

Today, we’re featuring Binh Nguyen, Senior Director, Program Operations, State National Companies (SNC).

For Binh, his family’s experiences shape how he shows up, both personally and professionally.

He shares that his grandparents left everything behind in Vietnam and started over in America, and their persistence and perseverance continue to drive him today.

Binh keeps photos of his grandparents in his office as a daily reminder of their sacrifices and the legacy he hopes to pass on to his daughter.

He adds that foods like banh bao remind him of home and family traditions. 🌏

From responsibility to results, last week’s leadership panel at the Markel Group Reunion Forum highlighted how empowering people to make decisions is driving growth across the business.

Simon Wilson, CEO of Markel Insurance, shared how putting decision-making in the hands of those closest to the business strengthens ownership and accountability while enabling faster, more informed decisions. He was joined by Andrew Crowley, Ross DeBolt and Kyle Norton.

As Simon noted, “It’s amazing what happens when you give people responsibility and the space to make decisions.”

The conversation also reflected how this approach unlocks opportunity, drawing on the strengths of leaders across the organization to identify new paths for profitable growth in an evolving market.

🧡 Strengthening our communities together.

In April, Markel employees around the world came together for Sam Markel Days of Service, bringing the Markel Style to life by supporting more than 30 local organizations.

We packed meals for those in need, supported patients and families seeking medical treatment, revitalized community spaces and helped clean up the environment—continuing Markel’s legacy of giving.

Thank you to all who volunteered. Our commitment to our communities continues beyond this month of service, and we look forward to keeping the momentum going.

During Military Appreciation Month, we’re proud to recognize colleagues who serve. Mac Hannon, Marine Claims Examiner II in Milwaukee, serves in the Coast Guard Reserve and has been deployed while working at Markel.

Over his 10 years of service, he has held leadership roles across the Coast Guard, including serving as Chief of Law Enforcement for Sector Lake Michigan and as the US Coast Guard’s Lead Maritime Planner for Exercise CENTAM Guardian in El Salvador.

“Markel has been amazing in supporting my military service.”

From flexibility during deployments and call-ups to consistent support from his team, manager and the Markel Veterans Network, Mac’s experience reflects how we support colleagues who serve. A few years ago, after a long deployment, he nominated Markel for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Freedom Award in recognition of that support.

“When I returned from deployment, every member of my team reached out to check on me and my family. That kind of support is rare.”

We’re grateful for the leadership, commitment and perspective Mac brings to Markel each day. 🎖️
