👷‍♂️ Is your construction company about to lose a piles of cash by making this mistake? 😵‍💫

If your subcontractors aren't properly insured or your sub-agreement isn't dialed-in you're the one who will be stuck with the bill.

A lot of contractors don't realize that they're on the hook for paying the insurance premium to cover the exposure of their uninsured subcontractors or 1099 workers.

Oh, and that you pay a penalty on this premium when unisured subs are discovered during an audit.

I've also spoked to contractors who are surprised to find out that a lot of the endorsements designed to transfer the risks to the subcontractor and keep claims from rolling up to the prime contractor, only work if they are specifically required by the subcontractor agreement.

That is to say - if these coverages are not mentioned in the subcontract, they don't protect the prime contractor. 😬

😃 5 Ways Contractors Can Lower Insurance Costs 💰
It’s frustrating. Your insurance renewal bill is on your desk, and it’s a lot higher than you thought it might be.

Your claims history, of course, can have an enormous impact on whether your rates go up or down. But it can sometimes seem as if some dark, unknown forces are wreaking havoc with your insurance rates.

While there are no silver bullets, what follows are 11 tips to help nudge your insurance costs in a more favorable direction, both now and in future renewal periods.

1. Incorporate safety measures such as fire alarms, sprinkler systems, security cameras, theft alarm systems, etc. All of these can help to reduce the chances of accidents or crimes, which in turn can help keep your insurance premiums lower.

2. Analyze your organization’s natural-disaster exposures. If you’re located in an area that is more prone to a specific type of catastrophe, implement mitigation and response measures that will protect your property as much as possible if such an event occurs (e.g., installing storm shutters on windows to protect against hurricane damages or utilizing fire-resistant roofing materials to protect against wildfire damages).

3. Make sure your replacement cost calculations are up-to-date and accurate to remain fully protected when covered events occur and avoid potential coinsurance penalties.

4. Develop a documented business continuity plan that will help your organization remain operational and minimize damage in the event of an interruption.

5. Ensure your establishment has measures in place to reduce the likelihood of customer or visitor injuries (e.g., maintaining safe walking surfaces and promoting proper housekeeping).

Navigating the insurance world can indeed be challenging and sometimes frustrating. But consistent, proactive risk management can certainly make a difference.

You’ll not only appease insurance underwriters but put yourself in a better position to withstand the unforeseen storms ahead.

👷 Not all work comp claims are legitimate. 😬
Here's a few indications your latest claim is worth investigating...

1️⃣ Monday Morning: The alleged injury occurs either “first thing Monday morning,” or late on a Friday afternoon but not reported until Monday.

2️⃣ Employment Change: The reported accident occurs immediately before or after a strike, a layoff, the end of a big project, or at the conclusion of seasonal work.

3️⃣ Job Termination: If an employee files a post-termination claim, verify if the alleged injury was reported by the employee prior to termination. You’ll also want to check whether the employee exhausted their unemployment benefits prior to claiming workers’ compensation benefits.

4️⃣ History of Changes: The claimant has a history of frequently changing physicians, addresses and places of employment.

5️⃣ Late Reporting: The employee delays reporting the claim without a reasonable explanation.
The workers' compensation insurance system is a no-fault method of paying workers for medical expenses and wage losses due to on-the-job injuries.

And while the majority of workers’ comp claims are legitimate, the National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that billions of dollars of false claims are submitted each year.

Remember, these warning signs are simply indicators. If you are suspicious of a claim, alert your insurance carrier.
