👷‍♀️ Can you see the snake?

If it takes more than 5 seconds... You died. 💀

In all seriousness, I'm not even sure this little guy is poisonous.

But that doesn't mean his bit won't cost your company a lot of money through a work comp claim and the increased premium that comes in the years to follow.

Especially, if the injury is mismanaged. 🫣

But here's a trick you might find helpful...

When looking for opportunities to lower a construction company's insurance premiums I look to a company's Emod worksheet and/or loss runs for claims.

Especially small claims. (Like non-poisonous snake bites. 🙃)

A lot of the time I find low dollar claims that should have never been claims in the first place.

It was often a minor injury that could have been treated with first-aid but because the company doesn't have a thorough process for managing workplace injuries, the employee ended up in the ER out of an abundance of caution.

If you don't have a dialed-in playbook for managing workplace injuries...

Or your company just isn't well rehearsed at managing injuries because you haven't had many - it doesn't take much for a string of minor injuries to make it look like you have a frequency issue.

🏗️ So how can you protect your Emod and future premium from being damaged by minor injuries?

It helps to...

🔑 HAVE A PLAN - A plan for deciding which injuries should be sent to the ER versus Urgent Care, and Occupational Clinic, and which can be handled with first aid.

🔑 COMMUNICATE THE PLAN - You have to communicate the plan over and over.

The more you can communicate your plan for handling workplace injuries the more at ease employees will become - assured you have their best interest in mind.

Plus, employees who feel value are less likely to litigate when injured on the job.

🔑 EXECUTE THE PLAN - Follow through is where the magic happens.

You also need consequences for employees who deviate from the plan.

CONTRACTORS: Don't let this cost you a pile of cash?! 😵‍💫 😬
🚿 🔧 A few years back, we were trying to win the business of a mid-size plumbing company...

They told us—confidently—that it was never going to happen. Why?

They loved their agent. The guy had saved them tons by switching them to a new carrier just a few years ago.

💰 Big savings. High fives all around. What could go wrong?

Well… When we find out who the carrier is. We won’t name names (to protect the innocent 😉), but the second we hear it, alarms go off.

Total Residential Exclusion.

This particular carrier doesn't cover contractors doing residential work.

The only problem with that is that about 50% of this plumber's work was residential. They’d been operating uncovered for years and didn't know it.

So, was the savings really worth it?

Moral of the story: Know your exclusions. Understand your carrier’s appetite. And maybe, just maybe… don’t trade coverage for cost.

Because insurance shouldn’t be a leaky pipe. 🚰

👷‍♂️ PSA for Contractors: This one thing is kill your premium! ☠️

Of course, I'm talking about...

Late reporting!

If some of your work comp claims don't get reported until days or weeks after the injury, you're making your insurance carrier very uneasy. 🤨

They may not want to renew your business as a result.

Non-renewals means you're going to paying more for you insurance somewhere else. 😢

As luck would have it however, The Mahoney Group helps contractors make late reporting a thing of the past - putting your company back on the path to more healthy and competitive insurance rates.😁 🤘

CONTRACTOR: All insurance brokers are the same!
ME: Just like all pizza is the same, right?! 🍕 The truth is...

The person in front of you might be great—but what really makes or breaks your experience is the brokerage behind them.

A broker’s real value comes from:
⚙️ The tools they can actually deploy
🧠 The strategies they’re trained in
🎯 And the types of clients their firm is built to serve

So before you shake hands and sign on the dotted line, ask yourself:
Is this firm designed to solve my problems—or just sell me policies?

A few signs you might not be your broker’s ideal client:

🚩 You only hear from them once a year (Hi! Happy Renewal!)

🚩 Your program feels more “auto-pilot” than optimized

🚩 You’re treated like a small fish (even though you're kind of a shark)

🚩 No one's talking about innovation or savings

🚩 They're nowhere to be seen at the events you care about

If you’re feeling a mismatch, I’d be happy to show you what an construction aligned partnership could look like—and how insurance can actually be a competitive advantage for your construction company, not just a line item.

P.S. When you're ready, here are 3 ways I can help (without the jargon):

🧾 Policy Report Card
Wondering if you’ve got coverage gaps or if your pricing is as competitive as it should be? I’ll take a look, no strings.

📄 Risk Transfer Audit
Hire subcontractors or vendors? If your agreements haven’t been reviewed by an insurance pro recently, we should talk.

📉 Claims Review
Had claims that spiked your premiums? Let’s dig in—because sometimes it’s not what happened, it’s how it was handled.

DMs are open. I promise it won’t be boring. 🙃

🏗️ Simplicity is key. If the insurance program for your construction company seem too complicated to understand, you're working with the wrong team. 😬

Whenever you're ready, here are 3 ways I can help you...

Policy Review: I'd be happy to review and grade your insurance coverage. 😁

❓ Got coverage gaps?

❓ Has your coverage been packaged and marketed in a way that ensures you get the best pricing available?

▶️ If you're not sure how to answer these questions, maybe we should talk.

Risk Transfer Audit: Do you hire subcontractors or vendors? 😬

❓ When was the last time your subcontractor or master service agreement was reviewed by an insurance professional?

▶️ If it's been a few years since you've updated your standard agreement, you could be leaving yourself open to liabilities, lawsuits, and major headaches that can be easily avoided.

Claims Review: Have insurance claims caused your premiums to increase? 😲

❓ Is it possible that your claims were miss handled by the carrier or by your broker?

▶️ If you're not sure, a quick review of your claims might give you insight to why your premiums are so high and how you can prevent claims from having such a big impact on your future premiums.

Shoot me a DM or give me a call and can schedule a time to chat in more detail about any of these. 👍

🪚 Know what's scarier than watching this guy fall on his wet saw?!🫣
It's something I see almost every day...

When a workplace injury happens…
…and that construction company "thinks" they know what to do next, but things still get really messy.

Here’s what I see all the time 👇

1. The employee doesn’t get care fast enough → injury gets worse.

2. The claim gets mismanaged → costs blow up 3–4X.

Sometimes? Both happen.

Either way, you can count on one thing:
💸 Your workers’ comp premium will be going up as a result.

Meanwhile, across town…
Your competitor is paying 10–30% less for the same coverage doing the same trade.

And not because they've been claim free.

No magic. No luck.
Just better claim management.

Here’s what that looks like:

✅ Claims handled right → cost less.
✅ Claims closed faster → stress less.
✅ Carriers love them → premiums stay low.

How?
They’ve got a partner (that’s us 👋 The Mahoney Group) who helps them:
🧠 Prevent more injuries
⚙️ Manage claims like pros
💵 Protect their bottom line

If you’re tired of paying “average contractor” rates, maybe it’s time to stop playing defense and start working with a team that’s been backing builders since 1915.

We don’t just sell insurance —
We help contractors face whatever comes next with confidence. 🦺
