Social capital is the BEST currency
Not money, not titles, not even skills because all of that fades. But the people who show up for you, who celebrate you, who pour into you? That’s the real wealth.
This birthday reminded me of that in a powerful way. My heart was so full watching my girls and my nieces dancing for me, reminding me of when I was young, performing for my grandparents at their anniversary. Full circle moments like that are priceless.
Growing up, we had the Cosby Show as a picture of family kids laughing, performing, adding to the story. Seeing my children live that out reminded me that these memories are legacy. They shape who they are and give them a foundation money can’t buy.
Scripture says: “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” (Psalm 127:3). That verse hit different this year. Especially for Black kids, being surrounded by love, laughter, and family is resistance, healing, and joy all at once.
I’m deeply grateful for everyone who came through, for the love, for the energy even those not pictured here. God has blessed me beyond measure with people who want to be here, who choose to do life with me. That’s not something I take for granted.
Here’s to 39, and here’s to carrying this fullness into 40.
(thank you to my beautiful amazing smart super daughter London and my two necies Cydnee and Harper)
