Shishigumi LA is an Okinawan lion dance performing arts group based in Los Angeles. Founded with the goal of preserving and evolving traditional Okinawan and Japanese folk performance arts, the group presents dynamic lion dance performances that blend tradition, movement, and cultural expression for diverse audiences. Through training, performances, and cultural exchange, Shishigumi LA strives to share the spirit, energy, and artistry of shishimai with the community.

We sincerely appreciate the Isami Group of Gardena Buddhist Church - GBC for livening up our and Celebration!

The Isami Taiko Group of Gardena Buddhist Church was started in 1984 under the support of the YABA/Free Spirit Group of Rev. Ben Mayeda by Tom Fukuman and Aimee Yamada and Family. The name was originally Gardena Buddhist Church Taiko Group then shortly changed to The Free Spirit Taiko Group of Gardena Buddhist Church. In 1990, the group changed its name to Isami Taiko.

The taiko pieces that are taught and played are a blend of traditional Japanese sound and contemporary American rhythms. Some of the pieces were composed by older members of the group while other pieces were exchanged with other taiko groups. All of the pieces are arranged and styled for the group by members of the group itself. The group is a non-profit organization , and does not have professional affiliations for composing, arranging or choreographing.

Thanks to Little Tokyo Historical Society for giving our Torchbearers a walking tour at Convening! Guide Bill Watanabe made a stop at the Go For Broke Monument to share its history and significance, as well as to highlight the new Go For Broke Plaza and our permanent home slated for completion later this year.

The Go For Broke Monument signifies the sacrifices of the 33,000 American WWII soldiers of Japanese ancestry who made it their fight to prove their loyalty to their country and to secure the rights and freedoms of future generations. It is engraved with the names of more than 16,000 Japanese American men and women who served during the war in the European, Pacific and China-Burma-India theaters.
