Kintsugi (金継ぎ), meaning "golden joinery," is the traditional art of repairing broken pottery with a special lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.

Instead of hiding damage, kintsugi highlights the fractures, treating breakage and repair as part of the object's history rather than something to disguise. Rooted in the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi—which embraces imperfection and impermanence—the practice serves as a powerful metaphor for human resilience, showing that our scars and healing make us stronger and more valuable.

About the Film
KŪKAI is the first documentary to offer a complete portrait of the life of Kūkai, the great who braved a perilous sea voyage to Tang Dynasty China in pursuit of the Dharma.

The film marks the feature debut of director Yue Ye, who produced it independently through crowdfunding and worked with a limited budget. Profoundly inspired by Kūkai's spiritual quest, in 2019 Yue Ye resolved to bring the spiritual world and enduring wisdom of this revered monk to contemporary audiences. Over the following 5 years, she worked alongside more than 800 film professionals, whose collective dedication brought the documentary to life.

As of July 2026, KŪKAI has received 8 international awards, including Best Documentary at the London Independent Film Awards. The film has also been officially selected for 40 competition and screening sections across 27 international film festivals. It has been screened nearly 40 times in 20 cities across six countries, with audiences in New York City, London, Tokyo, Sydney, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Oxford, Osaka, and Auckland and more. The film has resonated strongly with audiences around the world and has been widely praised for its depth, artistry, and spiritual insight.

Our calligraphy artist, Chiami, did amazing collaborations with an ink wash painting artist, Yoshimi from Japan 🇯🇵 for the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center - JACCC !

I had the opportunity to collaborate with calligrapher “Chiemi”at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACCC)in Los Angeles.
She is a calligrapher certified as a master instructor in the local community. She maintains a style that defies convention.
She wrote the character “Takumi” for me.
Amazing…
Afterward, I painted the Wind God and Thunder God,carefully selecting motifs and color tones that would not overshadow the calligraphy but rather complement it.
I was grateful that so many people stopped by to view my painting while I was working on it.

Our friends and neighbors from the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute (GVJCI) presents the return of "Showa Alley by the Shokudo"!

Come and experience a bit of as the breezeway is transformed into a ! (Yokocho is Japanese for “alleyway,” but it has grown in meaning to refer to the narrow streets packed with izakayas, bars, and eateries tucked away in Japan's busy streets.) Drawing inspiration from Japan’s post-war Showa era, you’ll be immersed in the sights, smells, sounds and tastes of a bustling Japanese alleyway brought to you by the team behind The Shokudo Series ​.

This year's event will be even bigger than the last in 2024! In addition to food and entertainment, there will be crafts, games, and a raffle with several drawings throughout the day. We also welcome the addition of Takumi Alley, a whimsical collection of merchandise partners curated by host and chef of The Shokudo, Jon Kenzo Okeya. We never know when the next Showa Alley will be, so don't miss out!

Proceeds benefit the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute, The Shokudo, and Grateful Crane Ensemble.
