THE MEGA BACKDOOR ROTH: A POWERFUL TAX STRATEGY FOR HIGH-INCOME EARNERS

Can You Move More Retirement Savings Into Roth—Even If Your Income Is Too High for Direct Roth IRA Contributions?

Making $200,000, $300,000, or more per year?

You may already know that high income can prevent you from contributing directly to a Roth IRA.

But here’s what many successful professionals and business owners don’t realize:

Your employer’s 401(k) may offer another path to Roth retirement savings.

It’s called the Mega Backdoor Roth Strategy.

1. What Is a Mega Backdoor Roth?

This strategy may allow you to:

1. Make additional after-tax contributions to an eligible 401(k).
2. Convert those contributions into a Roth account within the plan or roll them into a Roth IRA, when permitted.
3. Potentially enjoy tax-free growth and qualified withdrawals in retirement.

Unlike direct Roth IRA contributions, this strategy does not have a specific income eligibility ceiling.

However, not every 401(k) plan allows it.

2. Understanding the 2026 Contribution Limits

For 2026:

* Regular 401(k) employee contribution limit: $24,500 for most participants under age 50.
* Overall defined-contribution limit: $72,000, excluding eligible catch-up contributions.
* Roth IRA contribution limit: $7,500 for those under age 50.

Example:

Suppose you contribute $24,500 to your 401(k), and your employer contributes nothing.

If your plan permits additional after-tax contributions and conversions, you could potentially contribute another $47,500 after tax.

$24,500 + $47,500 = $72,000

That $47,500 could potentially be converted into Roth savings.

If your employer contributes $10,000, the remaining room in this example would fall to $37,500.

These figures assume you are under age 50 and otherwise eligible.

3. Why Does This Matter?

Traditional retirement savings generally defer income taxes until withdrawal.

Roth savings work differently.

You contribute money that has already been taxed, and qualified Roth withdrawals can be tax-free.

That may provide greater flexibility when planning for:

* Retirement income taxes
* Required minimum distributions
* Medicare IRMAA premiums
* Social Security taxation
* Estate and beneficiary planning

Roth conversions can still generate taxes on previously untaxed amounts, including investment earnings.

4. Three Questions to Ask Your 401(k) Administrator

First: Does my plan allow voluntary after-tax contributions beyond regular employee deferrals?

Second: Does it allow in-plan Roth conversions or eligible in-service distributions to a Roth IRA?

Third: Are there nondiscrimination testing restrictions or plan-specific limits?

If the answer to these questions is favorable, this strategy may deserve a closer look.

5. Don’t Confuse Tax Preparation With Tax Strategy

Tax preparation reports what happened.

Tax strategy helps you make decisions before the tax consequences occur.

The Mega Backdoor Roth is just one example of how retirement planning and tax planning can work together.

At BT Legacy Accounting Co., we believe the goal isn’t simply to earn more money.

It’s to structure your finances so you can potentially keep more of what you earn and build long-term wealth.

* Phụ phí Medicare do thu nhập cao

🔥DIVORCE & TAXES: ARE YOU REALLY GETTING YOUR FAIR SHARE? Total Elite insurance and Financial Services Lapson Luu

🔥LY HÔN VÀ THUẾ: CHIA ĐÔI TÀI SẢN CÓ THỰC SỰ CÔNG BẰNG?

Two assets worth $100,000 today may have very different values after taxes.

When couples divorce, most focus on who gets the house, retirement accounts, investments, and savings.

But there’s something many overlook: The tax consequences of dividing those assets.

A 50/50 division on paper doesn’t always mean both spouses walk away with equal after-tax wealth.

1. Community Property vs. Equitable Distribution

In the United States, property division depends on state law.

Community Property States: California, Arizona, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Generally, marital property acquired during marriage is treated as belonging to both spouses, subject to exceptions. California generally requires an equal division of the community estate, while Texas follows a just-and-right division standard.

Equitable Distribution States: Most other states divide marital property based on what courts consider fair, which doesn’t necessarily mean 50/50.

2. Not All $100,000 Assets Are Equal

Consider four different assets, each valued at $100,000:

Roth IRA — $100,000

Qualified Roth distributions are generally tax-free. However, account history, distribution requirements, and proper transfer procedures matter.

Traditional 401(k) — $100,000

Withdrawals are generally subject to ordinary income tax.

For example, at an illustrative 22% federal income tax rate, a fully taxable $100,000 withdrawal would leave approximately $78,000 before other applicable taxes or penalties.

Investment Portfolio — $100,000

Suppose the portfolio contains $40,000 in unrealized long-term capital gains.

If the entire portfolio is sold and those gains are taxed at 15%, the illustrative federal capital gains tax would be $6,000.

That leaves approximately $94,000 before state taxes and transaction costs.

Home Equity — $100,000

Home equity may be reduced by selling expenses, potential capital gains taxes, and other costs. The tax result depends on the property’s basis, ownership history, and applicable home-sale exclusions.

The lesson: Equal market values do not guarantee equal after-tax values.

3. Be Careful When Dividing Retirement Accounts

A 401(k) or certain pension plans may require a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) to divide benefits properly.

A QDRO can allow a former spouse to receive retirement benefits without triggering the usual 10% early-distribution penalty on qualifying payments from the plan. However, ordinary income taxes may still apply.

IRAs generally follow different divorce-transfer rules and do not use QDROs.

An incorrectly executed transfer or withdrawal can create avoidable taxes and penalties.

4. Separate Property Can Become Complicated

Assets owned before marriage or received individually through inheritance or gifts may qualify as separate property under applicable state law.

However, mixing separate funds with marital funds, changing ownership, or failing to maintain records can complicate classification.

5. Tax Planning Should Happen Before the Divorce Settlement

Before signing a property settlement, consider:

* The after-tax value of each asset
* Retirement account transfer requirements
* Capital gains and cost basis
* Real estate ownership and mortgage obligations
* Tax filing status and potential liabilities
* Future retirement income and tax consequences

A divorce settlement should account for what each person actually keeps—not simply what the assets are worth today.

At BT Legacy Accounting Co., we help clients evaluate the tax implications of financial decisions and coordinate with divorce attorneys and other professionals.

Don’t just divide assets. Understand the taxes attached to them.

2. Cùng $100,000 Nhưng Giá Trị Sau Thuế Có Thể Rất Khác

Trường hợp A: Roth IRA — $100,000

YOUR BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION COULD DETERMINE WHO INHERITS EVERYTHING YOU WORKED FOR.

Imagine spending your entire life building wealth for your family… only to have your children inherit NOTHING.

A mother passed away, leaving her estate to her husband.

The husband remarried. Years later, when he passed away, his new wife inherited the $2 million estate.

When she died, everything went to HER children.

His biological children received $0.

This is exactly why estate planning is not just about building wealth. It’s about making sure your wealth reaches the people you intended to protect.

🚨 WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU REVIEWED YOUR BENEFICIARIES?

Life changes. Your estate plan should change with it.

Marriage, divorce, remarriage, death, and the birth of children or grandchildren can all affect your legacy.

5 IMPORTANT STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY:

1. Review your beneficiaries regularly. Check your life insurance, IRA, 401(k), annuities, and other financial accounts.
2. Update beneficiaries after major life events. Don’t assume your will automatically overrides beneficiary designations.
3. Name contingent beneficiaries. Make sure you have a backup plan if your primary beneficiary passes away.
4. Consider a properly structured trust. Especially in blended families, a trust may help provide for a surviving spouse while preserving assets for your own children.
5. Coordinate your entire estate plan. Your trust, will, property titles, and beneficiary designations should work together—not against each other.

⚠️ REMEMBER:

Your beneficiary designation can override instructions in your will for certain assets.

And simply naming your spouse as the sole beneficiary does not guarantee that your children will eventually inherit those assets.

The $2 million story is a reminder of what can happen without proper planning—not an inevitable outcome of remarriage.

You worked too hard to build your wealth. Don’t leave its future to chance.

Protect your assets. Protect your children. Protect your legacy.
