🚨 COMMUNITY NOTICE: ELECTRIC BIKES & SCOOTERS 🚨
The Ganado Police Department has recently observed a significant increase in unsafe and reckless operation of electric bicycles (e-bikes) and electric scooters on public roadways within our community. Many of these incidents involve juveniles operating in a manner that places themselves and others at serious risk.
We want to ensure the public is aware that under Texas law, electric bicycles and motor-assisted scooters are subject to traffic laws and must be operated responsibly.
Key points to understand:
1) Electric bicycles are generally treated the same as traditional bicycles and must obey all traffic laws, including stop signs, signals, and right-of-way rules.
2) Motor-assisted scooters may only be operated on roadways with a speed limit of 35 mph or less.
3) Reckless behavior such as weaving through traffic, ignoring traffic control devices, riding against traffic, or carrying multiple riders is unsafe and unlawful.
4) Parents are responsible for ensuring their children understand and follow these laws.
Effective immediately, the Ganado Police Department will be actively enforcing violations involving electric bicycles and scooters. This includes, but is not limited to: Traffic citations and potential impoundment of equipment in certain circumstances
Our goal is not to issue citations, but to prevent serious injury or loss of life. These devices may seem harmless, but when operated recklessly on public roadways, they present a very real danger.
We ask for the cooperation of all parents and guardians to speak with your children about safe and lawful operation.
If you have questions regarding these laws, please contact the Ganado Police Department.
For reference regarding electric scooter laws, see Texas Transportation Code §§ 551.351 (definition of a motor-assisted scooter) and 551.352 (operation on roadways). For electric bicycle laws, see Texas Transportation Code § 664.001 (definition of an electric bicycle) and §§ 551.101–551.107 (operation of bicycles on roadways).
