Despite what's come out of the recent Fed meetings, many market participants feel that the Fed is done raising interest rates. More than that, they project that the next five Fed meetings will keep interest rates the same, before ultimately trending lower. While Fed Chair Jerome Powell has hinted that inflation isn't under control just yet, it remains to be seen as to whether interest rates have reached their peak.

The accompanying table shows that 98% of investors believe the Fed will raise short-term interest rates from 0.25% to between 5.25% and 5.5% at its July meeting. But after July, the Fed Chair and investors disagreed about what will come next. Most investors believe the Fed will not raise rates again. So who’s correct; the Fed Chair or the investors? The Fed Chair may have more insight into the economy, but investors are positioning portfolios based on their outlook for rates. So both have a lot at stake.

Individual investors becoming more upbeat about stock prices, there's still much skepticism. It can be challenging to break from a bearish mindset if you've been in that camp for a while.
