This May, our team at 4th Street Insurance Agency is taking time to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month and highlight an important distinction we see many people overlook: mental health and mental health conditions are not the same.
Understanding the difference helps all of us care for ourselves and support the people around us.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
💚 Mental health is something everyone has. It includes your emotional, psychological, and social well-being and shapes how you think, feel, and function day to day.
💚 Mental health conditions are diagnosable disorders such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD. More than half of adults will receive a diagnosis at some point in their lives.
💚 Good mental health and mental illness can coexist. With treatment, support, and healthy routines, many people with mental health conditions experience strong periods of well-being.
💚 Poor mental health doesn’t always mean mental illness. Stress, burnout, grief, or major life changes can impact your mental well-being without leading to a clinical diagnosis.
💚 Small daily habits matter. Coping skills like journaling, deep breathing, movement, and connection with others can help strengthen mental health.
💚 Professional support is valuable. Therapy can benefit anyone—not just those with a diagnosis.
If you’re struggling or unsure where to start, reaching out to a healthcare professional can make a meaningful difference. You’re not alone.
