Every single summer without fail...

The family shows up. Everyone sits down for dinner. And somewhere between the potato salad and the dessert one of the adult kids leans over and goes…

"Have you thought about changing to..."

"I really think you should call someone about..."

They mean well. They really truly do. But by the end of the night you've got four different opinions, three things to Google, two people who definitely contradicted each other, and zero actual answers.

Sound familiar?!

Here's the thing. Medicare is not a one size fits all situation. What worked for your neighbor, your coworker's mom, or whoever your son read about on Facebook may have absolutely nothing to do with what's right for you.

You deserve real answers based on your actual situation. Not opinions offered at the dinner table.

Here's a scenario I hear more than you'd think.

Someone walks into the pharmacy in January to pick up a medication they've been taking for years. Same drug. Same dose. Same pharmacy. And the price is completely different from what they expected.

Not because they did anything wrong. But because their plan's formulary changed.

Here's what that means in plain English.

A formulary is basically your plan's list of covered drugs. Every Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plan has one. And that list can change every single year on January 1st. Drugs can move to a higher tier which means higher cost. Some drugs can be removed from the list entirely. New requirements like prior authorization can be added.

Your plan is required to notify you about these changes. But let's be honest. That notice shows up in a thick envelope in October and most people set it aside and never open it.

So here's what I want you to do.

If you take any regular medications, it is worth a quick check to make sure they are still covered the same way they were last year. You can call your plan directly or I can help you look it up in about five minutes.

Because finding out at the pharmacy counter is the worst possible time!

🚒 Breakfast at the Firehouse? Yes Please.

Or did you just pour milk on cereal and hope for the best. No shame in it, but tomorrow you’ve got a much better option.

As part of Frontenac Mining Days, the Frontenac Firefighters 🚒👨‍🚒 are hosting their Pancake Feed from 8 to noon, and it’s the perfect excuse to get out of the house. Bring the whole crew. When we say all ages, we mean newborns, teenagers, grandparents, and anyone still kicking at 110. Everyone fits in at a pancake table 🥞.

It’s not every day you get to eat inside a real firehouse 🚨, walk through the bays, and check out all the trucks, tools, and gadgets our firefighters use. Kids love it, adults love it, and honestly, who doesn’t love pancakes made by people who run toward the emergencies the rest of us run away from.

Proceeds help support:
• The firefighter Christmas party 🎄
• Gifts for kids during school fire‑safety visits 🎁
• Scholarships for graduating seniors 🎓

UPDATE: Sadly, the dog did not survive despite efforts to provide emergency veterinary care. We are still trying to identify and locate the owner. FOUND DOG – OWNER NEEDED

Please help us locate the owner of this dog.

She was found in the 1600 block of West Meadows Drive. She is wearing a black and green collar that appears to say “Irish” along with additional lettering that cannot be clearly read.

The dog weighs approximately 22 pounds and is currently very sick. Due to her condition, she has been transported to Town and Country Animal Hospital, where she will be cared for and receive treatment.

If this is your dog or you know who the owner may be, please contact the Frontenac Police Department as soon as possible at 620-231-9216.

Here's something I wish more people knew before they ever needed it.

When you go to the emergency room with Medicare, you are covered. That part is true. But the bill that shows up afterward? That's where a lot of people get caught off guard.

Here's the part that surprises people most.

Urgent care and the ER are not the same thing in Medicare's eyes. If you've got a bad cut, a high fever, a sprained ankle, something that needs attention but isn't life threatening, urgent care is almost always the smarter and significantly cheaper move.

The rule of thumb I give everyone is this. Chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injury, anything that feels truly life threatening, get to the ER immediately. Everything else? Your closest urgent care is worth considering first.

And do you even know where your closest urgent care is in Frontenac? That's worth knowing before you need it!

If you have a Medicare Supplement or Advantage plan, your costs in either situation may look different depending on your specific coverage. Really important to know ahead of time rather than in the moment!
