Myth I hear a lot around here: "Cash is safe." πŸ’΅

It's safe from a bad stock market week. It's not safe from rising prices.

With inflation at 3.7%, $20,000 sitting at 0% buys what about $19,286 buys today after one year, and about $16,678 after five years if prices kept rising at that pace.

To be fair: your emergency fund should be in cash. That's its job. The issue is long-term money sitting there for years.

Quick check: do you know what your savings account is paying right now?

Hypothetical: $20,000 at 0%, 3.7% inflation; not a prediction.

Ever see a week where "the market" was up AND down? Last week was one.

The Dow gained 0.7%. The S&P 500 fell 1.9%. The Nasdaq dropped 4.5%.

The reason: a big sell-off in AI and chip stocks, plus an inflation report showing prices up 3.7% in a year, mostly from gas.

The takeaway for families: "the market" is an average. It's worth knowing what's actually inside your 401(k), so one rough week for one group of stocks doesn't throw off your whole plan.

Anybody else check their account last week and then put the phone down fast? πŸ˜‚

Quick gas-tank math for my Frisco and DFW families β›½

A year ago the national average was about $3.16 a gallon. This weekend it's about $4.30.

Two cars, 12,000 miles each, 25 mpg = 960 gallons a year.
A year ago: $3,034. Today: $4,128.
That's about $91 more a month, for the same drop-offs and the same practices.

We can't control the pump. We can control the plan: know your real monthly number, and keep a little cushion for exactly this kind of thing.

What's gas running near you this week?

Hypothetical: 2 cars, 12,000 mi/yr each, 25 mpg; AAA national averages.

Sunday thought for the week ahead:

Don't make a 30-year decision because of a 30-day headline.

Rates, inflation, the market: the news changes every week. Your family's plan shouldn't change with it.

Selling after a scary week, pausing savings "until things settle down," dropping coverage to free up cash: those feel good for a day and can cost you for years.

Play the long game. Enjoy your Sunday, Frisco! 🏈

Saturday mornings at our house look a lot like Monday mornings at the office. Same standard, different uniforms πŸ’ͺ

Show up on time. Do your job, even the part nobody claps for. Pick up a teammate who's having a rough day.

My boys hear it on the field. Our team hears it at work. And I need the reminder most of all.

Hope all my Frisco families are having a great weekend. What are you all up to today?

Heads up, Frisco friends: Medicare open enrollment opened this week and runs through Dec 7. Plans change every year (copays, drug lists, which doctors are covered), so it's worth 20 minutes to read the plan's change notice and compare before the deadline. If you help Mom or Dad with this, now's the time to sit down together. New plans start Jan 1.

Friday money tip for my Frisco friends: the Rule of 72 🏈

Divide 72 by your rate of return to see roughly how many years it takes money to double.

8% β†’ about 9 years
6% β†’ about 12 years
3% β†’ about 24 years

It works in reverse too: at 3% inflation, a dollar buys about half as much in roughly 24 years.

The earlier you start, the more doubles you get. Happy Friday, everybody!

Hypothetical math only; returns aren't guaranteed.

Open enrollment season is here! Medicare's opens today (Oct 15 – Dec 7), and a lot of DFW employers are running theirs now too.

Before you click "keep everything the same," check three things:

1. Disability coverage. Social Security estimates about 1 in 4 of today's 20-year-olds will become disabled before 67.
2. Life insurance through work. It often ends when the job ends.
3. Beneficiaries. New baby, marriage or divorce? Update the forms.

And if your parents are on Medicare, give them a call this week to look over their plan changes.

Thirty minutes. Worth it.

Myth I hear at almost every backyard BBQ: "Take Social Security at 62 and get yours while you can."

Here's the math if your full retirement age is 67. Say your full benefit is $2,000 a month:

At 62 β†’ $1,400 a month for life
At 67 β†’ $2,000
At 70 β†’ about $2,480

Starting early gets you ahead at first. Waiting catches up around age 80.

Health, family history and whether you need the income now all matter. There's no one right answer, but it's a bigger decision than most people think.

The new cost-of-living raise for 2027 comes out today, too.

When are you (or your parents) planning to claim?

Hypothetical: $2,000 full benefit; ignores COLAs and taxes. Percentages from SSA.

Why do loans keep getting more expensive? Here's last week in plain English.

The 10-year Treasury yield, the rate a lot of mortgages and car loans key off of, hit its highest level since 2002. The average 30-year mortgage reached 7.40%.

The flip side: savings accounts and CDs pay more than they have in years.

The stock market? It hit a record anyway. Markets don't always match the mood at the dinner table.

Big one this week: the new inflation report comes out Wednesday.

Where are you feeling it most: house payment, car payment or groceries?
