Apparently, the MRM office is where fictional worlds collide. 🎃

This Halloween, we welcomed Carl from Dungeon Crawler Carl, an extraterrestrial visitor, Columbia from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Hermione Granger from Harry Potter!

We're not entirely sure how this group ended up together, but we're here for it! 😂 🫶

Happy Halloween from the MRM crew!

Consider a family with roughly $18 million spread across eight different brokerage firms. For years, that setup may work just fine. Nobody has a reason to change it.

Then one family member takes over oversight of the trusts. Overnight, she has eight advisor relationships, eight sets of statements, eight investment philosophies, and nobody obvious to ask how any of it fits together. Managing eight separate financial relationships, many working independently and potentially using overlapping strategies, can become more than one person is willing or has the time to coordinate.

We see this more often than people expect, because wealth accumulates one decision at a time. An old 401(k) stays where it is. One advisor picks up one account. A new opportunity gets handled somewhere else because it came up fast. Trust assets arrive years later. Every individual choice may have made sense on the day it was made.
Eventually somebody has to see all of it at once. Investment decisions run straight into taxes, estate planning, cash needs, charitable giving, and the next generation, and when assets are spread across multiple firms, those connections can be harder to spot.

One useful test: if you stopped managing your family's assets tomorrow, how many people would have to coordinate to keep it running? That number tells you a lot.

We made it through tax season, so naturally, we celebrated with a murder mystery. 🔎

Our team traded spreadsheets for suspect lists, investigated crime scenes, and put their detective skills to the test.

We're happy to report that everyone survived tax season. Unfortunately, we can't say the same for the murder mystery victim. 😆

Congrats to The Dream Team for cracking the case!

Need Dallas recommendations? Marcey has a few favorites. ☀️

For a day with little ones, she suggests Klyde Warren Park for the splash pad, playgrounds, and food trucks. Then, head to Lower Greenville for Son of a Butcher and a stop at Voodoo Doughnut.

What would you add to Marcey’s Dallas list?

The federal estate and gift tax exclusion rises to $15 million per person in 2026. For families above $25 million, the more useful conversation starts after that headline.

The scheduled sunset is gone under current law, and inflation adjustments begin after 2026. The old planning rhythm was driven by a shrinking window. Families now have more time to decide which assets should leave the estate, how much control they want to retain, and which structure fits the life they are still living.

That may bring SLATs, GRATs, and private placement life insurance into the same planning meeting, although they solve different problems and belong under different legal, tax, investment, and insurance rules.

The deadline disappeared. The need to build the right structure did not.

The first audit has a heavy learning curve. The team is documenting processes, understanding controls, and working through how the company actually operates.

By the second and third year, the auditor has enough context to notice where the accounting process slows down, where one control is carrying too much weight, or where a company that wants to double in size still has the finance function of its earlier stage.

Brian explains why continuity matters. Familiarity with the business can turn the audit from an annual exercise into more useful operating advice.

You don’t have to choose between holding a concentrated stock position forever and selling it outright.

I talk to a lot of people with a significant portion of their net worth tied to one company. It may be a business they built, stock accumulated over a long career, or a position they’ve held for so long that selling feels like giving up on a decision that worked.

They understand the risk. They also understand the capital gains tax waiting on the other side of a sale. So the position stays in place year after year, and doing nothing becomes the decision. Meanwhile, one company continues to have an outsized impact on a family’s financial future.

There are several ways to approach this without simply selling the position and paying the tax all at once. You can hedge some of the downside while creating liquidity, build capital losses elsewhere in the portfolio to offset gains as you sell, or use certain tax strategies to defer gains and potentially reduce the overall tax impact. In many cases, the best answer isn’t one strategy, but a combination of several over time.

None of these are one-size-fits-all. The right approach depends on the stock, cost basis, size of the position, liquidity needs, and what the family is ultimately trying to accomplish. Each strategy has its own trade-offs and requires coordination across investment, tax, legal, and risk planning.

The question underneath all of it is pretty simple:

How much of your family’s future do you want one stock to control?

If one stock represents a large share of your wealth, it’s worth understanding what options exist before deciding to do nothing.

A K-1 can feel like the moment a tax problem appeared. Usually, it is the report card for decisions made in the operating agreement, loan documents, capital accounts, and transaction papers long before the return was prepared.

That is how a partnership can allocate income without distributing enough cash to cover the tax. It is also how debt relief can create gain during a buyout, or why three partners cannot assume one property sale will produce three clean exit paths.

A 1031 exchange may defer qualifying real estate gain, but a partnership interest generally is not like-kind real property. Basis, debt allocations, contributed property, the waterfall, lender consent, and the order of the steps all need to be reviewed while the deal can still change.

The CPA should not be seeing the structure for the first time when the K-1 is ready.
