Hurricane Season, which can bring flooding, has started. Even though a flood may be the result of a hurricane, if water gets into your home through rising water, even due to hurricane rains or storm surge, it can only be covered through Flood Insurance. Your homeowners and/or Windstorm policy will not cover it. Don't depend on FEMA to bail you out.

From Space City Weather: As Eric and Matt closely watch the tropics for us, Reliant wants to encourage Texans along the coast to start preparing – even before a storm is brewing. The first 72 hours after a storm hits are the most crucial to save lives. Supplies like bottled water, backup power, shelf-stable food, first aid kits, emergency blankets, waterproof protection for documents, signaling glow sticks and whistles are important to have gathered in advance. You can find a helpful storm prep checklist at the Reliant Storm Center.

Texas Division of Emergency Management Tips:

✅ Please make sure your household is prepared focusing on the 4 P’s. People, pets, pipes and plants!

✅ Plan to minimize travel, and if you need to be on the road, slow down.

✅ Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Only use generators and grills outdoors and away from windows. Never heat your home with a gas stovetop or oven.

✅ Be prepared for winter weather at home, at work and in your car. Create an emergency supply kit for your car. Include jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water and non-perishable snacks. Keep a full tank of gas.

Hurricane Preparedness Tips for Coastal Residents
• Have Enough Insurance – Have both flood and windstorm insurance. If you don’t have them already, now is the time to add these coverages. Flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period; and most windstorm insurance providers, including TWIA, are unable to accept applications for new or increased coverage when a hurricane enters the Gulf (learn more).
• Avoid Surprises – Read your policy before a storm hits. Understanding how you’re covered can help you navigate the claims process more easily. Verify your contact information, know your deductible, understand your endorsements, and ensure you have enough insurance to cover the cost to rebuild your home, if needed.
o Want help reviewing or updating your policy? Schedule an insurance checkup with your agent!
• Secure Your Property – Don’t delay general maintenance to your roof or property. Install storm shutters and roof straps, trim trees and clear gutters, and reinforce garage doors
