How bail itself works.
Bail is the system courts use to release someone from custody while ensuring they return for trial — it's not a fine or punishment, but a financial guarantee. Understanding how judges set bail amounts (based on factors like flight risk, ties to the community, severity of charges, and criminal history) is the foundation everything else builds on.

Types of bonds.
Cash bail (paying the full amount directly to the court), surety bonds (the most common — a bail bondsman posts the bond on the defendant's behalf), property bonds (using real estate as collateral), and federal or immigration bonds, which work quite differently from state criminal bonds.

The bondsman's fee structure.
Typically a non-refundable premium of around 10-15% of the bail amount, which is the bondsman's payment for taking on the risk. People often don't realize this money is gone even if the case is dismissed.

Collateral and indemnitors.
When someone (often a family member) cosigns or puts up collateral like a car title or house deed, they're taking on real financial liability if the defendant skips court. This is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — parts of the process.

Forfeiture and bail jumping.
What happens if the defendant doesn't show up: the bond is forfeited, the bondsman has a window to locate the person, and recovery agents ("bounty hunters" in popular language) may get involved.

Using a local bail bondsman.
Bail Bondsman are typically able to perform bail throughout the entire state, but must be registered with the court clerk in each county individually. Many bondsman act like they are "local" in all 77 Oklahoma counties, but actually reside elsewhere. The local bondsman in that county will be familiar with their local system and can help you navigate court dates and times. Be careful and make sure you choose a local bondsman that is actually in the county.

I found bail bond records from my Great Grandpa Eddie Cassidy from 1974 in Jackson County....that's 52 years we've been doing bail.

I've thought it was at least 40...but now at least 50.
