We love seeing our Pathway to Transportation graduates move toward a position of long-term financial stability! 🚗

🟠 How it works:

✓Participants must save $400 and participate in budget coaching and credit counseling in order to purchase a car through our new program.
✓The program requires participants to save only a portion of the total cost of their vehicle while maintaining a direct sale between Second Chances Garage and participants.
✓United Way of Frederick County will match each participant’s savings for the remainder of each car’s cost.

James Baker is the 26th graduate of United Way’s Pathway to Homeownership Program. In a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 19, James celebrated his family’s new home with the people who had helped him reach his goal of homeownership!

James first reached out to United Way for tax assistance in 2014. At the time, he was finishing up his last semester at Hood College, majoring in Business Management and concentrating in International Finance and Economics. During his time at Hood, both James and his wife Andrea began working for AmeriCorps.

After graduating from Hood College and having his first child, James started working at United Way in 2015 as an AmeriCorps VISTA member.

At United Way, James helped build the Budget Coach Program in the Prosperity Center. He was hired as a full-time employee in 2017 as the Prosperity Center Manager. As a Prosperity Center Manager, James helped to build the Pathway to Homeownership program that he eventually took advantage of to buy a home for his family.

Congratulations, James!

We are happy to share this photo of the Asian American Center of Frederick promoting Empower U program in the neighborhood yesterday. This program partners with the Prosperity Center and VITA to help households claim Earned income tax credit (EITC) and reduce Adverse Childhood Experience (ACEs).

If you have not yet received your return from VITA, rest assured that our staff and volunteers are working as hard as they can to complete everyone's taxes as swiftly as possible in spite of our many delays, and that all returns will be filed before the deadline.
