This is one of those boring parent money tips that can quietly save you real money.

If your kid just graduated high school, is heading off to college, and is not taking a car with them, call your insurance company and ask about the “student away at school” discount.

Teen drivers are expensive to insure.

The Insurance Information Institute says adding a teenage driver can increase the cost of a family’s auto coverage by 50% to 100%.

That is exactly why this discount is worth asking about.

A lot of parents keep paying the same auto insurance premium because nobody tells them this is even an option.

Meanwhile, the kid is living on campus, the car is sitting at home, and the insurance company is very happy to keep collecting like nothing changed.

Every carrier handles it differently, but many insurers use a 100-mile rule, meaning the student usually needs to attend school at least 100 miles from home and not have regular access to the vehicle.

You may need to provide school info, confirm they are not taking a car, or meet age requirements, but it is absolutely worth the phone call.

College is already expensive enough with tuition, housing, meal plans, books, fees, dorm stuff, travel, and everything else that magically costs $400.

Do not accidentally overpay for car insurance just because your kid moved out and nobody updated the policy.

The easiest money to save is usually the money you forgot you were still spending.
