While we obviously focus on card payments, ACH payments have quietly been growing and still represent a large opportunity for merchants. While we normally think of ACH as being most applicable to the B2B space, growth is also happening in many other industries, such as home services and automotive. In some situations, ACH can be much more affordable or reliable than card transactions.

According to recent numbers released by NACHA, the standards organization for ACH payments, traffic increased by nearly 6% in 1Q26, to a total of nearly 9.1 billion transactions.

For the second time this year and the third time in two years, Toast has significantly raised its credit card processing fees. In addition to SaaS program fee increases, Toast merchants have seen the following:

September 2024
23 bps on all card types

March 2026
10 bps on V/MC and 21 bps on AMEX

September 2026
20 bps on V/MC and 21 bps on AMEX

According to Toast's own numbers from a recent earnings call, Toast merchants average $1.2 million in processing volume annually, and approximately 22% of that volume is AMEX. Therefore, the average Toast merchant has seen the annual cost of processing increase by a whopping $6,700 in the last 24 months alone.

Wow. Just wow.

I always enjoy working with businesses where operations don’t just happen behind a counter.

We recently partnered with a local auto repair and towing company that was still using an older Desk 3500 terminal. It worked—but it didn’t match how their business actually runs day to day, especially with drivers out in the field needing to take payments on the spot.
