I always enjoy working with businesses where operations don’t just happen behind a counter.

We recently partnered with a local auto repair and towing company that was still using an older Desk 3500 terminal. It worked—but it didn’t match how their business actually runs day to day, especially with drivers out in the field needing to take payments on the spot.

So we upgraded their setup to a Valor VL100 Pro terminal in the shop and equipped their tow truck drivers with six Valor RCKT mobile card readers.

Now they can take payments wherever the job happens—at the counter, roadside, or anywhere in between. No delays, no extra steps, just a smoother experience for both the team and their customers.

This is something I see a lot in service-based industries—great businesses being held back by outdated equipment. The right setup doesn’t just process payments, it supports how you operate, improves cash flow, and makes things easier across the board.

Recently, J.D. Power released its 2026 U.S. Merchant Services Satisfaction Survey, based on feedback from nearly 4,500 merchants across 36 states.

While much of the study focused on large processors like Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and Stripe, three data points really stood out to me:

1️⃣ 34% of merchants have already implemented credit card surcharging (or another method to offset processing costs).

2️⃣ 73% of those merchants describe the move as “generally positive” or “extremely positive.”

3️⃣ Of the 66% who haven’t implemented surcharging yet, nearly half are considering doing so in the next 12 months.

That tells me two things:

- Cost recovery is no longer fringe — it’s becoming mainstream.

- There is still significant opportunity for businesses that haven’t evaluated their options.

If you're a business that accepts electronic payments, be sure to ask the following three questions of your merchant services provider...

1️⃣ Can you clearly explain every fee on my statement?
If the answer is confusing or full of jargon, that’s a red flag. You should always know what you’re paying — and why.

2️⃣ Do my rates stay consistent, or can they change without notice?
Interchange fees may fluctuate, but surprise markups and hidden “junk fees” shouldn’t be part of the deal.

3️⃣ Who do I call when I need help — and will they actually know my business?
Real support matters. Especially when payments, payroll, or POS systems impact your day-to-day operations.

What is Surcharging?

There are fees to businesses when customers pay with credit cards, and merchants in most states have the choice of passing these fees on to their customers.
