Ohio finally has protections for minors receiving structured settlements! One look at NSSTA’s breaking news and you’d think something truly mind blowing happened. It hasn’t. While this is certainly a good start, it’s the absolute bare minimum a state should do to protect people from predatory cash-now factoring companies; it’s just not enough. More than minors are routinely taken advantage of in these sorts of transactions. Look at the revelations all over the country! Reforms have been made in states from one end of the nation to the other to try and rein in abusive factoring practices, but few in office truly understand how structures work, much less a factoring transaction. They know even less about how the predators find their prey. Many of these well-intentioned reforms have actually made things easier for cash-now pushers.

Minors shouldn’t be preyed upon. We agree. But, we go one step further to say that even those in the age of majority shouldn’t be preyed upon either. Protect all annuitant personal identification information (PII). Don’t stop at minors. Do this and you’ll find the predators can’t find prey anymore.
