$125 Million MoneyGram Fraud Settlement Open for Claims

Here is some good news for consumers who may have been caught up in a scam between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017 where they were convinced to transfer money via MoneyGram, a very popular transaction method favored by fraudsters. MoneyGram, via their agent, Gilardi & Co. LLC, is distributing $125 million dollars as part of a 2018 settlement with the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice.

But where there is an opportunity for cash there are criminals trying to cash in. It is particularly important for consumers to know that they should not respond to anyone who says that they can help them file a claim for a lower cost or to save on attorney’s fees. This is another scam! There is no cost to the affected consumer to file a claim, and an attorney is not needed. Find out more information in this 06-01-2021 bulletin from the FTC.

If you used MoneyGram to send money to a scammer between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017, you may be eligible to file a claim for a refund.

Data breach incidents happen almost every day, but recent breaches by technology service providers, such as Solar Winds, multiply the impact. The recent breach of Accellion has impacted Kroger Pharmacy customers, U.S. law firm Jones Day, and Washington State's auditor, which resulted in the exposure of files on 1.6 million consumer claims obtained in its investigation of massive unemployment fraud last year.
