The S&P 500 hit a record close this week. The 10-year Treasury yield came along for the ride.
For the week: S&P 500 +1.15%, Dow +0.93%, Nasdaq +0.65%.
Large caps led early, with the S&P 500 setting a record close Tuesday. Thursday brought a tech pullback after an OpenAI revenue disclosure came in below expectations, and Friday’s rebound won most of it back. Small caps lagged, with the Russell 2000 down about 1%.
The pressure point is still rates. The 10-year touched about 5.35% early in the week before strong Treasury auctions cooled it to around 5.25%.
Next week: bank earnings kick off Tuesday, September CPI inflation lands Wednesday, and retail sales Thursday.
With rates above 5% and year-end coming, now is the window for bond ladders, cash, and Roth conversion decisions. That’s where we’re focused with clients right now.
