Organized Today, Confident Tomorrow: A Financial Organization Series

Your financial life is a team effort.

Most families rely on more than one professional for guidance. Your financial advisor, attorney, estate-planning attorney, tax professional, insurance agent, health care providers and financial institutions may all play a role.

Keeping that team organized can help your loved ones know where to turn when questions come up.

If you would like an approved resource to help organize your financial life, message our office or visit my Edward Jones website to connect.

Who should be notified?

During a major life event, loved ones may need to contact children, grandchildren, close friends, family members or other important people.

Keeping a personal contacts list can make that process easier. Names. Phone numbers. Emails.

A little organization today can reduce confusion later.

Action to Take: Create a personal contact list

Where are your important documents?

One of the most practical things you can do for your family is document where important papers are located. That may include wills, powers of attorney, health care documents, trusts, burial instructions, birth certificates, marriage records, real estate deeds, vehicle titles, tax returns and other key records.

The goal is not to overwhelm yourself. Start with one category, then build from there.

Action to Take: Identify one area of documents you can gather and store confidently. Notify someone you trust of the location of the documents.

Organized Today, Confident Tomorrow: A Financial Organization Series

Your story matters.

Legacy is about more than assets. It is also about your story.

A financial organizer should include space for personal history, family information, education, occupation, organizations, achievements, hobbies, values and other details that may help loved ones honor your life well.

Action to Take: Begin writing your story. What key details do you want remembered? What values do you want to instill?

A difficult topic. A meaningful gift.

No one enjoys thinking about funeral or burial wishes. But documenting those preferences can be a meaningful gift to the people you love.

A financial organizer should include space for funeral home information, memorial service preferences, burial or cremation wishes, prepaid arrangements and special requests.

Planning ahead does not make the topic easy, but it can make a difficult time less confusing for your family.

Action to Take: Begin the conversation with loved ones. Document final wishes.

When was your last insurance review?

Insurance can play an important role in a family’s financial picture.

A personal financial organizer can help track life insurance, long-term care insurance, disability insurance, liability coverage, health insurance, property insurance and vehicle insurance.

A good question to ask: Would my family know what coverage exists and who to contact? If the answer is unclear, that may be a good reason to get organized.

Action to Take: Complete and document an annual insurance inventory.

Could someone find your key accounts?

Many families do not realize how much financial information lives in different places. Bank accounts, mortgages, credit cards, vehicle loans, education loans and other debts can all be difficult to track down if they are not organized.

You do not need to share every detail with everyone, but it can be helpful to keep a clear record of where accounts are held, who to contact and where information can be found.

Action to Take: Write down your where your key accounts are held, who to contact, and where important information can be found and let someone you trust know where that list is kept.

Who would your family call first?

One simple way to create clarity for your family is to keep a list of important contacts.

That may include your financial advisor, attorney, tax professional, insurance agent, health care providers and other trusted professionals.

When life changes quickly, your loved ones should not have to search for the people who can help.

Action to take: Write down your key contacts and let someone you trust know where that list is kept.
