As the temperatures rise, many of us will experience water damage from pipe breaks. Plumbers, restoration companies, and contractors are being overwhelmed with calls, so a lot of patience will be needed. Needless to say, your insurance company's claims departments will be taxed to the limit as well. You will need to start some of the clean up yourself. Below are a few steps that you can take to help with the process.
1. Disconnect your electricity by switching off your breakers in the areas affected by standing water.
2. Stop the source of water by shutting off the water at the main. If you know in advance how to do this, you will not necessarily have to call 911.
3. Move contents away from the flooded area or elevate them on blocks of some kind. You want to keep the furniture from
absorbing water.
4. Call a Plumber. If the damage is severe also call a Water Damage Restoration Company as soon as possible. Get scheduled.
5. Start drying out your house to prevent mold and mildew buildup. Use mops, towels and a wet/dry vacuum. (again,
restoration companies are swamped with calls)
6. Don't throw away damaged property. Your insurance company may need to document what the value of the damaged property is so they can pay you appropriately.
7. Document all that you've done or spent money on. This will be helpful with your insurance claim.
