In 1998, my dad surprised our family with a red Firebird Trans Am. Life was good—he was a psychiatric unit director, and my mom was a respected diagnostician. My dad developed a neurological disease, losing his ability to work. In 2011, my mom suffered a brain aneurysm, leaving her permanently disabled. My dad passed away that same year at 60. They had some life insurance but lacked sufficient cov

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Me and my mom — and our little four-legged sidekick. Some moments remind you what really matters.

A few years ago, New York Life ran a Super Bowl ad about “Agápē” — the kind of love that shows up. Not just a feeling, but something you do. It hit me then, but it hits differently now.

Over the past year, I’ve stepped into a role I never quite planned for: caregiver for my mom.

Her journey hasn’t been easy. After a brain aneurysm, she developed aphasia — which makes communication incredibly hard. Her go-to phrase is “come here,” and I hear it dozens of times a day. Sometimes more. I know she’s trying to say something else. I know she’s in there, fighting to be understood. And I know she’s not trying to exhaust me. But some days… it’s just plain hard.

And then something happened that I’ll never forget:

My compliance partner — who’s also a caregiver — shared what I was going through with leadership. Not long after, the head of our Dallas-Fort Worth office jumped on a Zoom with me.

Not to talk business.
Not to check production.
Just to say: “We’ve got your back.”

That moment choked me up. Because it wasn’t policy — it was people.

What’s stuck with me most is this: we often prepare for our kids. But we rarely prepare for our parents. Or for ourselves.

That’s why I talk to families about options — like financial protection for extended care events, or policies that offer flexibility later in life. It’s not about fear. It’s about giving your future self (or your future kids) more choices when the hard days come.

If you’ve ever wondered how to prepare, or how to make caregiving easier when the time comes — I’d be honored to help.

𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝘀.

In the first photo, my mom is watching over me as a baby, full of love and care. In the second, I brought her to watch me play drums at an outdoor gig when a caretaker was unavailable—this time, I’m the one making sure she’s safe and taken care of.

The other day, I caught myself saying:

"𝑀𝑜𝑚, 𝐼’𝑚 𝑠𝑜 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑜𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒! 𝐼’𝑑 𝑚𝑢𝑐ℎ 𝑟𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑝𝑜𝑜𝑝 𝑜𝑓𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑏𝑢𝑡𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑑!"

If that sentence makes you uncomfortable, imagine being on either side of it. These are the moments most people don’t think about until they happen—but when they do, they change 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚. Caregiving, whether expected or unexpected, isn’t just about responsibility—it’s about dignity, comfort, and making sure your loved ones get the support they need when life takes an unexpected turn.

If you’ve been in a caregiving role, you know how much it impacts daily life.

What’s something you’ve learned from the experience?

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
