Did you have to sit down after opening your renewal this year?

Premiums are up significantly across the board right now, often 20 to 30 percent for fully-insured plans. It's the market, not anything specific to your business.

If your renewal hasn't come in yet, this is the time to get ahead of it, not after the number lands. The good news either way: a straight renewal isn't the only option. More employers are looking at level-funded plans, which can mean more predictable costs for the right group. Just be careful with anything that looks too good to be true. Not every alternative out there is a legitimate one.

Open enrollment may be when employees make their benefit elections, but it should not be the only time they hear about what is available to them.

A quick reminder about where to find an ID card. A note about telehealth or preventive care. A simple explanation of a benefit employees may have overlooked. Those small touchpoints can make benefits easier to understand and more useful when employees actually need them.

Life insurance is one of those things people often set up and then forget to revisit.

But when life changes, your coverage and beneficiary information may need to change too.

A few good times to review your policy:
- marriage or divorce
- having or adopting a child
- buying a home
- a change in income
- starting or growing a business
- updating beneficiaries

It is not just about having coverage. It is about making sure it still reflects your life and the people you want to protect.

If it has been a while since you reviewed your policy, this may be a good reminder to take another look.
