Six months after we helped Elizabeth with health insurance, she found a lump in her breast.

This is a true story, but I've changed her name and a few details to protect her privacy.

When Elizabeth first called us, she had a problem that a lot of small business families face. Her husband had recently started a business. The company wasn't large enough for group health insurance to make sense, and neither of them had access to health insurance through an employer.

Elizabeth told us something pretty simple:
"I'm healthy. I really just want protection if something big happens."

So that's what we focused on. Instead of trying to make her situation fit into one specific type of health insurance, we looked at the financial risks she was worried about.
⭐ A serious accident
⭐ Cancer
⭐ A long hospital stay

We put together a combination of a health indemnity plan, specified disease coverage for cancer, and an accident policy. Elizabeth liked the protection, and she liked that the monthly premium fit her budget.

Then, about six months later, everything changed. Elizabeth found a lump in her breast. She went to the doctor, had the testing done and received the news nobody wants to hear. Breast cancer.

The health indemnity and cancer policies did exactly what we had intended them to do. They paid cash directly to Elizabeth, which helped her deal with the medical bills she was suddenly facing.

I'll never tell you there's one health insurance solution that's right for everyone.
Because there isn't. Your health, family, budget and financial risks are different from the person sitting next to you.

Health insurance doesn't have to look the same for every person.

There are options.

Insurance myth #5

If my home is damaged, my insurance company will pay whatever it costs to fix it.

FALSE

Many Texas homeowners are surprised to learn their policy may include things like:
🏠 Roof payment schedules
πŸ’° Actual Cash Value instead of Replacement Cost
πŸ“‰ Percentage deductibles for wind and hail
πŸ“‹ Coverage limits that haven't kept up with today's rebuilding costs

These things can greatly reduce what you are expecting to get after you file a claim.

The best time to figure out what your policy will actually cover is before the next hail storm rolls through town.

Let Paul help you to review your policy so you can understand what is covered and what is not.

Think of your insurance deductible as your spot in line.

Something bad happens and the bill is $20,000.

You and the insurance company are both standing there looking at it.

You say:
"Alright insurance company, you're up."

The insurance company says:
"Not so fast, chief. You go first." πŸ˜‚

This is the part that they call your deductible.

If you have a $2,500 deductible, you are agreeing to take responsibility for the first $2,500 of a covered loss before the insurance company starts paying its share.

Why?
Because insurance is about transferring financial risk, but the insurance company is not going to just write you a blank check for everything that could possibly go wrong. You need a little skin in the game too.

You keep a portion.
The insurance company takes the bigger portion.

Generally, the more risk you're willing to keep through a higher deductible, the less the insurance company needs to charge you in premium.

And that creates an important question:
How much risk can you comfortably afford to keep?
A $10,000 deductible might save you money every month.
But saving $50 a month doesn't feel nearly as exciting when you suddenly need to come up with $10,000.

The goal isn't always to find the lowest deductible.
And it isn't always to find the lowest premium.

It's finding the right place to draw the line between the risk you keep and the risk you pay the insurance company to take.

That's what a deductible really is.
