One concern that can keep crew from accessing mental health support is wondering who will know.

If counseling is included in your Crew Health benefits, accessing that support is confidential. Your captain, HOD, management company, or other leadership will not be notified simply because you choose to speak with a counselor.

Mental health support is a benefit for a reason. Whether you’re dealing with stress, anxiety, a difficult transition, or just need someone to talk to, you can use it.

If mental health benefits aren’t available through your plan, organizations like YachtCrewHelp and Yachtie Minds Matter offer support specifically for yacht crew.

Whether you’re reviewing your current plan or arranging new cover, this checklist will help you stay organized and confident throughout the policy year and renewal.

> Set a clear budget and talk to your insurance broker about your priorities. Select the plan that balances cover, compliance, and cost.
> Request multiple quotes and review each plan’s benefits carefully.
> Look out for geographical restrictions.
> Understand the plan’s administration for a clear understanding of enrollment procedures, billing, and claims.
> Enroll crew as soon as possible especially on US-style plan designs to avoid gaps in cover. Aim to have enrollments completed by the 5th of the month so that cover can start on the 1st of the month.
> Educate your crew on what the plan covers and how to file a claim if needed. Your insurance broker will be happy to do this.
> Stay in touch with your insurance broker and share any concerns promptly throughout the year.
> Start the renewal process early. At least 60 days before renewal, discuss potential benefits adjustments or alternative options with your broker.

This month, members of the MHG team are taking part in Marathon 4 Mental Health, completing 26.2 miles throughout the month to help raise awareness and funds for mental health support within the yachting community.

We’re proud to take on the challenge and help keep mental health part of the conversation while supporting resources available to those across our industry.

When a crew member is unable to work due to a covered illness or injury, the financial impact can extend beyond the individual.

Without Sick Pay coverage, a vessel owner may be responsible for continuing the crew member’s salary while also paying for someone to fill their position.

In 2025 alone, MHG’s Sick Pay plan paid more than $3.2 million in benefits across 182 incidents, helping provide an important layer of financial protection for both crew and vessel owners.
