Insurance often gets overlooked in financial planning, but it’s one of the most important ways to protect yourself and your family.

Here are the main types of insurance and why they matter:

Health Insurance: Helps manage the high cost of medical care.

Life Insurance: Provides financial security for loved ones if something happens to you.

Disability Insurance: Replaces part of your income if you can’t work due to illness or injury.

Long-Term Care Insurance: Covers the rising costs of assisted living or in-home care.

Homeowners/Renters Insurance: Protects your home and belongings from damage or theft.

Auto Insurance: Required by law, and protects against costly accidents.

Umbrella Insurance: Extra liability protection beyond home and auto coverage.

The right mix depends on your goals and family’s needs, but insurance is about more than policies—it’s about peace of mind and protecting your financial future.

It is extremely rare that I talk to someone who has retired and isn’t busy.

Why?

We all tend to fill our time with something. Sometimes, family members will fill our time for us.

But a successful retirement is not about being busy. It’s about the same things that have driven your success throughout your life. It’s about finding activities you are passionate about and pursuing them. It’s about feeling fulfilled. It’s about ongoing growth.

As a financial advisor, I like to work with individuals to ensure they are not just busy, but are having a successful retirement.
That requires clear goals and proper planning.

One of the ways I’ve seen many retirees check all the boxes of success in retirement is through being a mentor.

There are many opportunities for mentorship at schools and businesses. You can decide on how much time you can spend. You can even do it remotely if travel is an issue for you. The truth is there is a need for those with the wisdom developed over decades to pass some of that on to the next generation. You will find plenty of options if you search for mentorship opportunities near you online.

You may even be surprised by the diversity of what is needed. From helping others your age and older learn technological skills to helping young kids with basic life skills. From coaching high school kids on how to properly prepare for a career to teaching a crafting skill to peers. You can be a mentor to a group or focus on individuals. Mentors are needed everywhere.

If you are unsure of your retirement plan, come see me and my team. We can help you work towards a successful retirement.

College isn’t the only path to a great career. With rising tuition costs and student debt, more families are exploring alternatives. Here are a few strong options:

Trade Schools & Apprenticeships – High-demand jobs like electricians, welders, and mechanics often pay well and require less schooling.

Tech Bootcamps – Short, focused programs in coding, IT, and cybersecurity can lead to strong starting salaries.
Entrepreneurship – Starting a small business can provide independence and financial growth.

Certifications – Real estate, project management, and other licenses offer career opportunities without a 4-year degree.

The key is finding the right fit for your skills and goals—and making sure the investment makes financial sense.

You’ve heard of FLOW. It’s that mental and physical state where you immerse yourself into your activity and operate at an extreme level of efficiency.

It’s an amazing feeling when you get into it, but what does it take to get there?

I have found it takes five things:

Practice, practice, practice. You need to practice the skills you’ll use during your flow in all different ways. Make that practice stretch you to your limits. Then, when it’s time to perform, your body and mind will be prepared to operate with little to no thought.

Eliminate distractions. In the office, give yourself a power-hour at least once a day. Put your cell phone away, turn off notifications on your computer, and let others know to not pass you phone calls. Maybe even take that smart watch off and set it aside.

Set clear goals for what you will accomplish by the end of that hour. Maybe you’ll make 20 phone calls. Maybe you’ll write that whole article. Maybe you’ll clean out your inbox. Whatever it is, decide what will be completed by the end.

Make your goals challenging. You want to push yourself in your flow time. If you aren’t giving everything you have to the activity, distractions can sneak in. Even if they are just thoughts on what you’ll eat for dinner.

Take care of yourself physically. Your body can be a machine, but you need to feed it the right energy through a healthy diet. You also need to let it fully rest by getting enough sleep. I know both of those are easier said than done, but the closer you get to perfection in both, the better your body and mind can operate.

I’ve found that getting into a flow more often brings greater joy and satisfaction with that activity. Here’s to a productive week with plenty of flow time for all of us.

There are many habits that help pave the way to financial success, here are a few tips that I recommend. How many of these are already on your financial checklist?

• Getting a Financial Check-up – You need to know where you stand before you can move where you want to go. It’s always good to have a check up on your financials. My team and I would be happy to take a look at your plans and tell you what looks good and what could be better.

• Having Monthly Financial Meetings – Build this habit in your family, have your partner there and include the kids as well. Doing this as a family will set clear direction on your shared goals so you can plan together.

• Not Procrastinating on Financial Tasks – Make it easier for future you! Keep your tax paperwork organized. Maximize your retirement contributions. Get a head start for your college-age kids applying for FAFSA and scholarships as soon as possible.

• Negotiating with Service Companies – When’s the last time you’ve checked on your cable and streaming services? How about your gym membership or cell phone plan? How often do you use these services? Call them and negotiate a better service deal, or just cancel them if they are unused.

How do you rate your financial wellness? These small steps can level up your finance goals to new heights!

✏️ Back-to-School Isn’t Just for Kids
New school year, new goals—it’s the perfect time to review your financial plan.

✅ Start early: The sooner you save for education, the more time your money has to grow.
✅ Plan beyond college: Sports, hobbies, and opportunities add up.
✅ Be a role model: Teach kids about saving and smart spending.
✅ Review annually: Kids grow, and so do their financial needs.

This season, sharpen more than just pencils—sharpen your financial strategy.

Let’s make sure your plan is ready for the year ahead.

📘 Tuesday Trivia: Back-to-School Savings! ✏️

Question:
True or False?
You can use a 529 Plan to pay for K-12 private school tuition.

Think you know the answer? 🤔

________________________________________________________

The answer is TRUE! You can use a 529 Plan to pay for K–12 private school tuition — up to $10,000 per year per student.

While 529 plans were originally created for college savings, the law was expanded to include K–12 tuition at public, private, or religious schools.

Just a reminder: not all states follow federal rules exactly, so it’s a good idea to check with your tax advisor or financial planner.

💡 *Creative Ways to Save for Your Child’s Education* 🎓

Saving for college isn’t always easy—life happens! If you’ve fallen behind on your goals, you're not alone. The good news? There are *plenty of creative ways* to catch up.

Here are a few ideas you might not have considered:

✅ **ROTC Programs** – If your child is interested in military service, college could be covered in exchange for future service.

✅ **House Hacking** – Buy a house near campus, rent out rooms, and let the rent cover college living expenses!

✅ **Start a Side Hustle Together** – Earn money *and* build business skills while spending quality time as a family.

💬 *Have you tried any of these? Or do you have your own creative solution?*

🚴‍♂️ What the Tour de France Can Teach Us About Investing

The Tour de France isn’t just a cycling race — it’s a masterclass in endurance, strategy, and teamwork. And believe it or not, these same principles apply to your financial journey.

🏁 Set Clear Goals

Athletes train relentlessly. Likewise, consistent investing and resisting short-term temptations help build long-term wealth.

🌦 Be Adaptable
Cyclists adjust to terrain and weather. Your financial plan should evolve with market changes, life events, and opportunities.

🤝 Work as a Team
No rider wins alone. Behind every success is a team. As your financial advisor, I’m here to ride beside you every mile.

Let the spirit of the Tour de France inspire us to pedal forward — toward a future built on clarity, resilience, and smart planning.
