When you’re in a dispute with a credit bureau, your memory isn’t evidence. Your documentation is.

Think of this as your "Credit Battle Buddy": a single folder, digital or physical, where your financial life is organized and ready for inspection. Whether you’re preparing for a VA loan or dealing with a PCS move that shifted your billing address, having your records ready is half the battle.

Here is your essential checklist:

- Your most recent credit reports from all three bureaus.
- Leave and Earnings Statements (LES) for the last 3 months.
- Copies of PCS or deployment orders (critical for SCRA protections).
- A log of every phone call with lenders (date, time, and who you spoke to).
- Certified mail receipts for any disputes you’ve sent.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the burden of proof is on the creditors to provide accurate information. If they can’t prove it, they shouldn't be reporting it. But you need your own paper trail to hold them accountable.

Save this checklist for your next move.

Misunderstanding a line of fine print shouldn’t cost you a VA loan or your security clearance.

In the military, clear communication is a mission requirement. We believe credit advocacy should be the same.

Whether you’re more comfortable in English or Spanish, ChalkUp provides bilingual support to ensure you fully understand your rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA). We don't just "fix" credit; we advocate for families who deserve a fair shot at financial readiness.

You shouldn’t have to navigate complex consumer protection laws alone: especially when there’s a language barrier involved. Our team is veteran-owned and mission-focused. We speak your language, literally and legally. 💬

Drop a comment if you have questions about how we support our bilingual community, or message us to start your free military credit assessment.

Your VA disability rating doesn’t just impact your monthly check: in North Carolina, it can significantly lower your mortgage payment.

If you’re a veteran in the Tar Heel State with a 100% permanent and total disability rating, you likely qualify for the Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exclusion. This benefit reduces the assessed value of your primary residence, lowering your annual tax bill.

Current NC law provides a $75,000 exclusion, and thanks to recent legislation, that amount is scheduled to increase to $125,000 this July. For families in the Fort Bragg and Fayetteville area, this can mean thousands of dollars saved over the life of your home. 🎖️

Surviving spouses who haven't remarried are also eligible. The deadline to apply with your county tax office is June 1st, so don't wait to file your paperwork.

Claiming the benefits you’ve earned is a key part of financial readiness. 🏠

The "California tax" shouldn't cost you your credit score.

Living at Camp Pendleton comes with unique challenges, from high housing costs in Oceanside to the financial strain of frequent PCS moves. For military spouses, managing the family’s credit health while navigating the SoCal cost of living is a mission-critical task.

When debt utilization creeps up or address changes lead to missed notifications on your credit report, you need an advocate who understands the terrain. We don't offer "hacks": we provide a strategic defense for your financial future.

Your service shouldn't be penalized by a system that doesn't account for the realities of military life. Whether you're preparing for a VA loan or just stabilizing the home front, we have your back.

Take the first step toward financial readiness.

Leaving the barracks or on-base housing is more than just a change of scenery : it’s a reality check for your credit score.

When you’re in uniform, housing is often a given. In the civilian world, your credit report is your resume. Landlords use it to decide if you’re a risk, and a low score can mean higher security deposits or having your application denied entirely.

It isn’t just about the three-digit number. They’re looking at your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio too. If your monthly debt payments take up a significant chunk of your gross income, many property managers won't even look at the rest of your file.

Transitioning is stressful enough without finding out a "forgotten" utility bill from two PCS moves ago is trashing your score.

Take a look at your report at least six months before you terminal leave. Spot the errors early so you aren't fighting the bureaus while you're trying to sign a lease. If you find something that doesn't look right, don't wait to address it.

Drop a "READY" in the comments if you’re planning a move this year. 🎖️

Your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is only the beginning of the VA loan mission.

The real hurdle isn't getting the certificate : it’s the documentation trail that follows. I’ve seen too many families find the perfect home only to get stalled at the finish line because of a reporting error or a missed address from a previous PCS.

Closing on time requires a strategic timeline. You should be auditing your credit report 6–12 months before you plan to buy. Look for old address discrepancies, incorrect balances, or missed SCRA protections that could impact your debt-to-income ratio.

A smooth closing is built on preparation, not just eligibility. Don't wait for the underwriter to find the problem. Identify it now so you can fix it before you make an offer.

PCSing OCONUS shouldn't mean leaving your credit vulnerable back home.

Whether you’re stationed in Germany, Japan, or Guam, monitoring your U.S. credit reports is a critical part of mission readiness. Identity theft doesn't take a deployment cycle off, and a sudden drop in your score can impact security clearances and future financing.

Here is how to guard your identity while overseas:

Place an Active Duty Alert. This tells creditors they must verify your identity before issuing credit. Under the FCRA, this service is free for one year for service members.

Check your reports regularly. Distance shouldn't equal delay. Set a monthly reminder to review your files for unfamiliar address changes or inquiries that often follow a move.

Use a secure VPN. When accessing financial accounts from foreign networks, ensure your data is encrypted to prevent local intercept.

There’s a reason lease-to-own stores are clustered right outside the installation gate.

They aren't there for your convenience. They're there because they know exactly when you get paid and how much you value a comfortable home for your family.

On the surface, it looks like a win: "No credit check" and "low weekly payments." But when you do the math, you often end up paying three to four times what that couch or laptop is actually worth.

Worse, these agreements are often structured to bypass Military Lending Act (MLA) protections that cap interest rates at 36%. Because it's a "lease" and not a "loan," they can charge effective rates that would be illegal in any other context.

If you're looking to furnish a home after a PCS, check your installation’s lending closet or local thrift shops first. Don't let a "low payment" lock you into a debt trap that follows you through your next promotion.

A generic dispute template won't account for a PCS move or a deployment.

When you’re active duty, your credit report issues are often tied to the unique realities of military life: address changes, deployment timelines, or SCRA violations.

Standard templates from the internet are designed for civilians. They don’t mention your Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) or your orders. If you want a factual error corrected, you need to provide the specific military documentation that proves the bureaus got it wrong.

We don't use "hacks" or loopholes. We use the law and your actual service record to demand accuracy.
