When you’re in a dispute with a credit bureau, your memory isn’t evidence. Your documentation is.
Think of this as your "Credit Battle Buddy": a single folder, digital or physical, where your financial life is organized and ready for inspection. Whether you’re preparing for a VA loan or dealing with a PCS move that shifted your billing address, having your records ready is half the battle.
Here is your essential checklist:
- Your most recent credit reports from all three bureaus.
- Leave and Earnings Statements (LES) for the last 3 months.
- Copies of PCS or deployment orders (critical for SCRA protections).
- A log of every phone call with lenders (date, time, and who you spoke to).
- Certified mail receipts for any disputes you’ve sent.
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the burden of proof is on the creditors to provide accurate information. If they can’t prove it, they shouldn't be reporting it. But you need your own paper trail to hold them accountable.
Save this checklist for your next move.
