Keeping it Simple: The A, B, C's of Medicare!

Medicare can feel like a lot to figure out, but understanding the basics can make it much easier. With AEP starting in just 2 days, here’s a quick look at the main parts of Medicare:

-Part A: Helps cover things like hospital stays and skilled nursing care. Most people don’t pay a monthly premium for Part A.
-Part B: Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services and more. Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B.
-Medicare Advantage (Part C): A way to receive your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company. These plans combine Part A and Part B and usually include prescription drug coverage and some extras.
-Part D: Helps cover prescription medications. Your costs and coverage can vary depending on the plan you choose. If you have Original Medicare with or without a Medicare Supplement, you’ll generally need a separate Part D plan for prescription drug coverage.
-Medicare Supplements (Medigap): Works alongside Original Medicare and can help pay some of the costs that Original Medicare doesn’t, such as certain deductibles and coinsurance.
-Medicare Supplement plans are different from Medicare Advantage plans & work in completely different ways.

The important thing to remember: Medicare isn’t one-size-fits-all! What works well for one person may not be the best fit for someone else.

When reviewing your Medicare plan during AEP, it’s easy to focus on the monthly premium and forget about some of the details that can make a big difference throughout the year. Remember, the monthly cost is only one piece of the puzzle when deciding which plan is right for you.

Here are a few things you’ll want to check:

🩺 Are your doctors still in-network? Make sure your current doctors and specialists are still part of the plan’s network for the upcoming year.

💊 How will your prescriptions be covered? Check your medications, copays, tiers, pharmacy options and any changes to your prescription coverage.

📋 What’s changing with your plan? Review your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) to see if premiums, deductibles, copays, benefits, networks or other costs are changing.

🏥 Are your hospitals and other providers covered? Your doctor may be in-network, but it’s also important to look at the hospitals, imaging centers, labs and other providers you use.

💳 What are your maximum costs? Don’t just look at the premium. Pay attention to deductibles, copays, coinsurance and the maximum you could pay out of pocket.

AEP is about more than finding the lowest monthly premium. It’s about making sure the plan you choose still works for you and your budget.
