The past year, there has been more fraud then ever for those that have a marketplace health plan, AKA Obamacare.
Individuals that do not have an agent are at highest risk as they often just shop during Open Enrollment and don't check again for 12 months. What has happened?
3rd party websites that allow agents to enroll people have made it too easy for rogue unscrupulous agents to access your health plan with only needing your name and date of birth to make changes to your health plan or 'claim' you as a client so that they can get paid.
Yes, this is fraudalent activity, but it has been so rampant that it has been difficult for the DOI to tract everyone down and even more difficult to correct the issues they caused.
It's like if you broke everyone's windows on their home, you might catch the criminal, but how long and costly is it to get new windows and have them installed, and for the rest of your neighborhoood..
It has given health brokers a bad reputation, hurt the customers pockets, along with us brokers by strealing commission, which is the root cause of all this.
To summarize, this stuff has happened without millions of people knowing it. Double check your coverage now to make sure you have the plan you got last Open Enrollment. See if you had an agent, if you still have the same one. If you don't have an agent, get one now, because we can monitor issues like this every month and correct the problem before its too late.
