🥰
The National Park Service just named a bear “H***y Chonk Beardonkadonk” and honestly if that’s not peak government humor, I don’t know what is. 🐻
Every year, Katmai National Park in Alaska hosts Fat Bear Week. Yes, that’s real. It’s a tournament where people literally vote on which brown bear is the absolute CHUNKIEST as they pack on calories before winter. And the Park Service’s social media team? They’re out here creating masterpieces.
H***y Chonk Beardonkadonk is basically a furry mountain of pre-hibernation preparation. This bear is here to win. And the rangers who named him? They clearly understand that public lands belong to ALL of us. The bears, the land, and the humans brave enough to give them absolutely legendary names.
But here’s where the vibe shifts and gets real for a second.
Those rangers cracking jokes about chonky bears? They’re working with a skeleton crew. The National Park Service has lost nearly a quarter of its permanent staff since early 2025 after firings, buyouts, and early retirements. Parks are closing campgrounds. Popular hikes are suspended. Search and rescue teams are stretched so thin they’re warning visitors about delays.
Last year, Congress literally proposed selling off 3.3 million acres of public land in Western states. The fact that it got pulled? That’s only because people across EVERY political spectrum freaked out. Hunters, anglers, conservatives, liberals, everyone said “nope, not doing it.”
So yeah, H***y Chonk Beardonkadonk is hilarious and the park rangers deserve raises. But they also deserve proper funding, proper staffing, and the ability to actually do their jobs protecting these spaces.
Fat Bear Week is fun. Protecting public lands is serious. Both matter.
